I've offered to teach a mate to gybe (he's been stuck at the same level for a number of years and needs a solid weekend of coaching to get over the 'hump').

I'm looking for a location somewhere in Victoria that has 'shallow' water i.e. somewhere he can gybe again and again and again and not have to waterstart once.

I'm thinking Rye-Rosebud on a southerly, but would like to know if there are other places suitable. Point Henry, Inverloch, Connewarre?

So better than Sandy where you have to gybe into deep water on SW?

Yes, same here, Invy is where I learnt. It's great as on low to mid tide you have super flat water. It's reasonably shallow though, so be careful. Then on mid to full tide the chop comes in and is great to then practice your gybes in the chop. People always say how flat it is at Invy and it can be, but it can also get some serious chop and is quite a challenge to gybe in - great training for the bay.

On low tide, yes. The channel that most people sail along is deeper, but at either end it's shallow.

Ricketts is flat and shallow on the inside on a westerly.

Dendy Strasse isn't too bad on the inside either.

I see Point Henry is shallow. Do you sail on the east or west side of the point?

Geelong side. Northern end gets deep as you head west. Southern end is mostly shallow. Bring a weedie and booties.

Swan Bay is another one. Nearly all wind directions, but loves anything with a north in it. Again weedie and booties. Launch from Queenscliff Lonsdale Yacht Club. Same distance as Invy from Melbourne. Sea ferry not far away.

Make sure you bring a latte for Hollywood and his secretary
