Hey guyz I remember late 80's early 90's windsurfing on Lake Cherry in Altona, is it still possible? Might be in Melb later this year and wanted to give it another go if you can still sail there? Be nice to strap on a gps and see what speeds are capable if a windy day?

Haven't sailed there for decades. I wonder if the mud is no longer radio-active?

I've looked into it a bit further. The western part of the lake is (still) a conservation zone, so boating and fishing (for carp, goldfish, and the odd redfin) is prohibited. I seem to remember that this was the case years ago, so probably nothing has changed. Not sure where the boundary is, but i do remember the best wind was on the eastern part of the lake, but you needed a bit of a run up from the conservation zone to make the most of the speed run.
I remember it was only any good in a honking northerly. There's been some industrial buildings built upwind- not sure if they're far enough away to give clean wind. That was always the problem with the western part of the lake- gusty air.
Ahhh, fond memories of Cherry Lake. At least the sensational grassy rigging area made up for the crap water quality and stinky toxic mud.

there's been a few posts on Cherry lake, so I went there today, there's a sign saying, amongst other things, no swimming, so my guess is that windsurfing would not be allowed.
So, just spent a hour or so this arvo out at Altona beach, was great given west / wnw wind, very smooth water. Sailed over to Point Cook and back - must be a few kms, so I think that was better than Cherry lake would have been

A mate of mine sailed at Cherry lake years ago - picked up a nasty rash, cleared up after a couple of months.

I got attacked by a turtle in sailing in Cherry Lake, never again. At least I thought it was a turtle.....

No. Don't do it... I guess you could though. It hasn't changed much in the last ten years. I kited there once. That was stupid. It's still pretty gross. There are WAAAY better places to sail. Ask anyone.
