Is it just me, or are all windsurfers mostly 50-65 kilos????

I ask, because there are quite a lot of boards in circulation around 70-90 ltrs......

You must need 30 knots of wind if you weigh over 80 kilos right? I'm 80 neat...well at 10 AM - then fluctuates 3 kilos during the day

for that size board, yes, you will need some decent wind, although not 30 knots. A steady wind will have you planing on a board that small in even 20 knots I think.

A gusty wind will require a bit more to keep you going in the lulls.

90kg here. Used to break a ton of things until I went carbon. I've worked out with my friend who is about 65kg that I need to use a sail roughly 1m larger for the same ride, although this space gets smaller as the sails do.

Would you say most of you guys have very good balance though?

I thought I did, but recently used a 135 ltr board, down 20 ltrs and found it more challenging - but spose you just addapt and get used to it.....

Yeah, you should check out the "Does this harness make my butt look big?" thread on the kiting forum. Heaps of pic's of kiters bums, and they even have a comp for the cutest kiter bum. They are so cool. I wish I was a kiter so I could stare at other kiters bums all day and learn how to knit. Knittings cool, you can knit your own kite strings!!!

And on an 80lt board last saturday...and way overpowered with a 4.7

. Not a common occurance.

I read somewhere that weight can be an advantage, especially for slalom/speed sailors.

The ability to control bigger sails in stronger winds is down to how low you can put your centre of gravity. Also if you are too light you get too much lift and less board control.

Best sailors in the world are heavy buggers. Bjorn Dunderbeck is 108kg or something like that.

Yeah I wouldn't doubt it for speed sailing. With my weight combined with a seat harness I can hold down some nice sail size. Nice if the weight is muscle rather than fat though, otherwise you may as well just wear a weight vest.
