Hi all,

I live in Melbourne (VIC), planning a trip to Geraldton in late September 2026 for about 4-6 weeks to go windsurfing and have a couple of questions.

I used to windsurf for about 25 years until about 15 years ago and got back into the sport at the end of last season. I've been on the water twice before Melbourne winter kicked in, getting used to the new gear and practicing water starts.
I weigh about 105kg, have a Severne Fox (125 liters), a 7.2m and 5.8m sail. Wind stats I can find on the web, for example the Bureau of Met. site seem to suggest that the average wind speed in October is ~15-20knots (is this correct?) which seems to suggest that I should be ok with the gear I have. I also understand the wind tends to increase in the afternoon in Geraldton?

My questions are as follows:
a) generally speaking, is Geraldton suitable for freeriding in October for someone like me who is getting back into the sport and needs to practice in moderate conditions? in other words, are there any flatwater spots or spots with only small waves? I understand that parts of Point Moore are suitable if the conditions are right. The Windhounds website (wind-hounds.com/sailing-spots/western-australia/coronation-beach/ ) seems to suggest that Corronation Beach is good for flat water windsurfing and i see Youtube videos that seem to show a flatwater area inside a reef at Corronation Beach.

b) is there anywhere in Geraldton to buy windsurf gear these days, specifically anything that can break, like masts? I could not find anything on the web (or here in this forum) suggesting there is a shop. I understand Sailwest has closed and I cannot access the "Stone Sailboard" website. The reason I am asking is if I should bring everything I need or can I can buy in Geraldton?

I'd be grateful for any info/insights re: both questions. Thanks in advance!

No shops in Gero. Bring everything you need from Perth.
Point Moore, Coro and St Georges are all great freeriding spots. Also lancelin and Cervantes on your way up. Safety bay is the best freeriding in the Perth metro area.
November is always windier and more consistent than October, if you can delay your trip.
Enjoy!
