I'm trying to learn how to Vulcan at the moment but would like to find some freestyle regulars so i can watch and pick up some tips and also learn the best spots for freestyle (probably the river i would guess)
If anyone goes out at weekends and doesnt mind me tagging along to pick up some pointers it would be greatly appreciated.
Ah i also forgot to say that if anyone else is looking at getting into freestyle and wants someone to spot / advise / laugh at then let me know as well as we can meet up and give it a shot somewhere.
i'll be running another series of freestyle sessions after the wave nationals. Monday the 8th of feb looks good to me. Location to be advised. The whole idea of the freestyle sessions it to get like minded ppl to help each other learn new tricks and push each other.
g'day Alimac23 i sail everyday at safetybay and have just started to get into freestyle myself (can vulcan, learning how to spock, flaka, puneta :)...) good spot to freestyle but you will need a weed freestyle fin or a reallt short freestyle fin to eliminate the weed, and there are a few other guys down here as well, some AWESOME others learning like myself welcome to come down and dont be shy to ask for pointers or to laugh...

I'm just trying to learn to vulcan at the moment (with very little success) but im on a 2010 JP FSW 102l but its got a 29cm FSW fin on it, what size fins does everyone else use? I'm wondering if the 29 is way too big and i've been looking at a Choco starfish 22cm fin, would anyone recommend these or is 22 too small / too big?

P.S. I live up in Butler so im way North of the city, is there any decent freestyle areas to sail up here apart from on the inside at Lancelin?

What would you recommend in terms on fin? The board im going to be using as i said above is a 2010 JP FSW 102l the pro edition and i weight about 95kg if that makes any difference.
Would you recommend the choco fins or maui fins? or another brand as being the best for their freestyle fins?
max down the river can pull vulcans all day on a evo 80. It is a touch harder than on a freestyle board unless you have good technique. but hey i cant land them yet. speak to max down at mellville.

start with vulcans and helitacks on other tac cos a spock is a vucan with a helitack at end. set up your eqip right, straps all way forward,narrow and high so the wide part of foot [just behind toes] squeezes though strap and high so strap in middle of foot. no bigger than 21cm fin high boom helps getting down pressure on nose of board when switching one side to other. i think the big tip for vulcans is dont think about what the board is doing as you pop the board concentrate on getting to other side of sail as fast as possible pop board let go with back hand, bring front hand across body towards tail of board,look back where you cam from, cross hands [back hand on top of front], grab other side of boom and keep it moving the direction you came from. as your body twist around sail the board will follow as long as its not stuck to the water also when learning dont bear off wind makes it to hard to pop board good luck

OK so it sounds like there's a few of us that are keen to try a bit of freestyle which is good, does anyone sail at the weekends north of Perth? The problem is that i work in the city and dont finish till 4.30 and by the time i get back to butler its about 5.45 so my sailing is quite restricted to weekends only.
What sort of price could you make me a freestyle fin for Bertie? that sounds great!

I get the train into work unfortunately so taking kit to works a no go but i could get back and be down to peli point for about 6.30ish, is that gonna be too late for the freestyle session?
I've been trying to get into some freestyle as well, albeit rather badly so far, I sail at Pinnaroo which is decent enough if you're looking for north. Near the beach is quite flat mostly for vulcan-ing etc and outside tending to focus on heli tacks at the mo... If its any use location wise for you come down and have a look!

Whenever there's wind, sail during the week early evening and weekends, will be there this afternoon. Happy to team up to push ourselves towards ever more outrageous wipe outs and the odd cheeky beer
I'm keen for freestyle sesh too. Let me know when its on I'll print some ads up at melville in advance. I saw 3 kids out at melville today I'd be hell stoked to see them down and get stoked on freestyle! They seemed a little bored today going back and forth though they were ripping along it was like 30kn today! Yeew!
Have you guys ever tried woodman point? I freestyle (volcan, spocks..) overthere almost every evening and the spot is amazing! it s flat as and really clean wind. Great session everytime. But I was wondering why I am almost the only freestyler to sail there? There are a few kites but there is heaps of space for everyone!

Where is woodman point? I've never sailed there but it sounds cool, is anyone going out for a sail this afternoon?
When Kev says 'a few kites' I think he's understating it a bit , there's a kite comp on the Northern side where the flat water is this weekend so I wouldn't bother tody although there will be the usual crew out on the Western end which is less flat.

Another question for the freestylers out there.... I weigh 97kg and the board ive got is 102 litres, wold i be better off buying a bigger board for getting into freestyle or doesnt the volume really matter that much as long as the technique is there?
Also you see freestyle sails but at the moment ive got maui sails legends, does the dedicated freestyle sail really make that much of a difference?
Yep woodman point (or woodies) is like 10min drive south of freo. Yea this week is definitively not the good one to sail there.... overpacked of kitesurfers! But the competition seems to stop wednesday the 3rd and I will be able to sail again to the awsome flat spot (orientated north), can't wait! The spot orientated west is not that great as there is a lot of seeweed. Good luck for the freestyle... the progression is really slow (at least for me..:))

Does anyone fancy a sail this coming weekend at lancelin or another flat spot and try and give this freestyle malarky a shot? If anyone sees a good wind forecast for anywhere flat then let post it here and hopefully we can get a few of us together.

So I rekond the ponch is more from a chop and goiter from a wave... I would go from a wave it looks easier! But it's the same story with the speed loop and the front loop... the same rotation but one is done from a wave
Humm I see the order... flaka, ponch and goiter! easy as! But the thing is I can't even start the flaka...! What I do is just bear away with good speed, bend the knees, jump and throw the sail upwind... But I can't get any rotation at all! Should I go higher and dive the noze? To fast? Humm I'm a bit lost...
