As a "non racing kiter"

It's well known that a windsurfer will destroy a kiter in the ocean chop.

My money is on IZZZZZYMYSTER

What's the course going to be and is there going to be anywhere for a good view like Woodies or will it be too far offshore for anyone without a boat ?

Anyways well done - sounds great !

Basic course at the moment is to start off the sailing club, along the point to Carnac Island and return. The beach on the north side of Woodies will be great for view, especially down near the pumping jetty where it is close to the finish line.

Footage for 49er nationals shows the inshore end of the course.

Nominations are now open

http://nominations.kingofcarnac.com/

For the Windsurfer division WWA will be selecting the final 30 to get invited (if and when we exceed 30 nominations). The basic criteria so far for select are:
- Current WWA (windsurfingwa.tidyclub.com/public/memberships/new)
- Experience sailing open water
- Number of years as a WWA member
- Recent LOC results
- GPS results
- First in best dressed so don't leave nomination until you are certain of the forcast.

If this does not sort the fleet out then the size of your bribe will pay a big part.

Decided to do a bit of open water practise yesterday. Safety Bay provides a chance to do open water sailing without being too far offshore.
Wind was 15-20 SW on the Garden Island reading but it was gusty as when I launched so went with an unusual combo of 6.3 Blade and 120L F2 SX 77 and a 33cm weedy(too light for my 91L). Rolling chop / swell (Rottnest reading about 1.5m) Penguin Island bar to the other side of the bay is just under 5km on a run square to the wind. (Yellow line is 4.5Km)

A number of observations:

No way on a regular seabreeze that the Carnac race is going to be a reach in both directions. It is going to be upwind / downwind unless it is a proper Southerly. Yellow line is 4.5 Km at the same angle.

Long legs on big boards in open ocean are hard work! I did 7-8 runs, some slightly upwind in about 50 mins for 32 kms total ( the supposed distance of the possible 2 lap race) and it was very physical! 6-7 mins on the same tack (about 4-5 Km) starts to get uncomfortable in those conditions and holding a line across the swell is much harder than a downwinder.

Will try and do a go at the actual sailing area next week if the conditions permit.

Some older track to have a squizz at

A single crossing

A triple crossing, just cruising :)

Remember all its not a sprint, need to pace yourselves :)
was chatting to Isaac about his Marius events 40-60km per race, he found doing short sprint bursts (1min) with short recovery worked best for him so cover the long distances.

^^^ Excuse my ignorance and general lack of investing skills but...
As this event is sanctioned and run by a yacht club (Jervoise Bay), is it necessary for racers to have EPIRB's?
I wasn't aware of any other dinghy or cat classes racing in Cockburn sound and the other anchorages that it was a requirement.

Off the beach classes, as typically sailed from sailing clubs, have an exemption from the general boating safety requirements given they general race a course and well covered by rescue boats. We have been unable to obtain a similar exemption for this event. Discussions are ongoing with DOT in this regard for future events.

The logic/arguement behind windsurfers and kites not getting an automatic exemption along the same lines is that a dinghy is easier to see in a search situation due to its bulk etc. Obviosuly for a windsurfer or kite this is not the case i.e. an 18 to 21ft catamaran would be much easier to find than board and sail/kite.

LOC have be advised of the situation for this event and they are already in discussion with DOT to ensure the approach exemptions are in place for their event.

Can anyone tell me if a SPOT GPS would be compliant with the plb requirements?

was down at sailing club over the weekend and it looks like a great set up. Plenty of grassed area for rigging etc.

I think there might be a small wind shadow behind the club so it would be great if the start finish line could be as far away from this wind shadow.

Are there any more details regarding schedule etc?

This is not a reply for the event organisers.
I'd guess No. Its's not a beacon that transmits on the required frequency.
also, without the $149 per year subscription, you do not get the notification forwarding from the company to the authorities.
its a GPS data logger with a universal SIM card (similar to a Kindle). No wonder they want $149 for the data charges.
