If you decide to go out at Mullaloo, then please be aware of where kiting is banned. There are signs up, and you can also do a search on here to see what the zones are.

When I was in your situation I body dragged and learnt to get on the board down in Perth on the river -- I wouldn't be learning up here. Pinaroo gets very busy and there's only really a small area to learn in -- if you get dragged 100m downwind then you're right in the middle of loads of windsurfers, any further down and you get stuck in a big wind shadow.

I don't know what it's like in the zone where you can actually kite at Mullaloo, it might be OK, but relations are pretty strained at the best of times with the council there so if I were you I'd be driving down to Perth. Once you can get on the board there's no problem mowing the grass at Pinaroo, but it's not somewhere I'd be trying to teach myself.

Note this is my personal opinion only, I'm sure loads of people have learnt at Pinaroo (I've seen heaps), it's just that I consider learning on the river to be safer.

Besides, you can take advantage of these verdammten easterlies!

If Pinaroo is your local beach - I'd go there rather than drive all the way to the river. There are others learning there too if you need to seek advice... and people keeping an eye out... and it probably one of safest beaches to learn.

Frankly, the fact that you are thinking about being a considerate beach user means you'll have no hassles at pinnaroo.

For me personally, I windsurf there a lot (years), never had a problem with learning kiters.

suss out the short chop - its really quite bad at Pinnaroo due to the ideal (ie perfect storm for horrible chop) spacing between the outer reef and the beach

this prevents long period sea from developing - which even the downwind exposed side of woodies seems to get due to the longer fetch (its a nice spot to ride)

but isnt short enough to keep the water flat

inside lagoon at lancelin has the same problem

its chronic and makes your rails bounce all over the place regardless of what craft you ride. In short its a horrible horrible place to ride.

in the long term i would recommend doing the drive to another spot...

Those of us who thought adouglas was doing the right thing by asking, even if in the wrong forum, cancelled out the red thumbs.
