I reckon it's 1987 - the second year of the race. The winner was Phil McGain - KA7 on the Orange Gaastra.

"F16" was a half-hour movie someone made about Lancelin and the race.

The speeds may have picked up a bit since then - they look slow don't they!

Ahahaa! I started on exactly those 'beauty of fluoro sails' Was quite a bit of a change when I got sponsored...to having high quality, state-of-the-art racing materials in my sails & board!
BIG difference.

that movie was done by a local guy called Jeremy Ashton

he still works in film and tv as a sound recordist - one of the best in Perth - i have had the pleasure of working along side him on a few projects.

In fact we were trying to locate a copy of F16 and a VCR not that long ago so we could watch the movie again

(ironically the sound guys on set are often the most rounded cinematographers and passionate about film)

A few interesting facts bout the movie

1.They called it f16 white light cos it was so bright that they had the camera irised down to F16

2. They missed the finish - Phi Mgain won

so they had to do a fake pick up shot of Phil coming in and finishing after the fact
The crew were in stitches because

" Phi Mgain had to film again " boom boom!

my friend and local WA guitar virtuoso Errol H. Tout also contributed some music for the movie. I borrowed his VHS copy last year, thanks heavens for digital technology
