I spoke to a parking inspector today who told me that the City of Subiaco is going to implement paid parking from 9am till 5pm on weekdays at Pelican Point. I'm wondering if we should be trying to make a stand against this... I have a big problem with the concept of paying to use the river for recreation. Does anyone know if there has been any sort of consultative process with WWA,etc.?

It has been almost impossible to get daytime parking there on weekdays lately because of all the uni students using it.

Unfortunately the parking fees will apply to everybody- uni student or otherwise, and they will be in effect right through the summer during the three months of university holidays so I doubt the council is making this change specifically for the benefit of the windsurfing community or anybody else who enjoys using this part of the river after work.

But at least you may have a chance to find parking there if it's not filled with students cars

That's true. I guess if nobody minds having find some change and organise a ticket before they rig up it's not such a bad thing. I'll be more inclined to sail somewhere else, but I'm mainly concerned about the impact this might have on our sport with that location being the best place for beginners that I know of with the shallows and onshore conditions, but as you say- paid parking is probably better than no parking. I guess we'll see...

I think it is disgraceful. Many years ago they used to mark tyres of the cars that are obviously not windsurfing and they got a ticket after 2hrs or whatever it was.
It was pretty easy for the parking inspectors to spot the non windsports cars - the Honda Civic with a parcel shelf full of teddybears and a Helo Kitty sticker vs a van with a spare board and 3 sails in it.
Yes it will be easier to get a parking spot, but it seemed to work fine 10yrs ago and I never had trouble getting a bay so what has changed? The Council can see $$$$$ only so I'll be sending an email to them

If I get a ticket I will fight them... I will not pay for parking when I want to go windsurfing.

The parking meter is now in use and they have wasted no time issuing tickets to parkers who haven't paid.
Fee is 20c per 12 minutes 9-5 PM weekdays, with a three hour limit.

Hmmm, so if I get my calculations right - give me a moment, I went to that Uni.....
.....that is $1 an hour to be effectively guaranteed a carpark in one of the most pleasant and accessible (NOTE - not hardcore or adrenaline fueled!) windsurfing locations in the entire country?
Sheee-it!! Wo/man the barricades on this one.....
