Hi All,

Just wondering what would be a sensible quiver (of say 3 sails) for Perth over the summer? I weigh about 95kg and am mainly into flat water stuff and really looking to get into freestyle this summer, i know it gets fairly windy here so i was thinking for my smallest sail a 5.0 or is this too big?

I'm not sure, I'm 80kg and my sails range from 3.7 to 5.2. I would have thought u'd need something a bit smaller like a 4.5, but it also depends what boards u're using.

Hi Zed,

I've got a JP FSW 102 which planes fairly early anyway so maybe smaller would be better, what do you reckon about a 4.5 a 5.0 and a 5.7 or something like that?

I weigh about 100kgs at the moment, but normally about 96kgs. When I have gone to WA to sail over summer I have found that I need a 5.5m, 6.0m, 6.5m, and 7.5m. I could probably use a 5.8m instead of the 5.5m and 6.0m.

Some seasons I have used the small sails and other seasons I have used a 7.5m and 8.5m to get the most sailing in. This is flat water sailing down at Rockingham.

I have lighter friends that use sails smaller than 5m, but I haven't seen a year for a while where I need anything smaller. I used a 4.7m one year but it was 30 to 35 knots, so not that typical.

I've been sailing in Perth or along the west coast for about 20 years now and my current weight is about 81kg. I predominantly sail a 79L JP wave board or a 84L JP Slalom and I carry a 5.0, 6.0, and 6.9 series of wave sails (Ezzy) in my quiver. Last season I weighed about 93kg but still had the same gear. I find these suitable for Perth but if you head further north (Leeman/Greenhead way) then you may need to step down a size. When I lived in Leeman, my every day sail was a 4.7, my high wind was a 4.2 and my light wind was a 5.2. These were with smaller wave boards ~70 odd L at the time. The opposite applies if you head south to Bunbury but I think it changes again once you get down to Cape Naturaliste.

If you are into flat water, the wind on the river is usually 5 - 10 knots lighter than the ocean, and gustier. I am only ~ 60kg but my most used sail for the river in summer is a 5.0.
Light wind days 6.2, 4.5 when it's really blowing.
The guys use much bigger sails than me.

If you are wave sailing go smaller.

Here's my quiver:

River sailing: 7.0, 95% of the time.

Ocean: 6.0 (60%), 5.0 (30%) and 4.5 (10%)

Weight: 85 kgs

Last saturday I had the 5.0 up, and had to change down to the 4.5... was glad I had it with me!

I have the severne gators 5.5 and 6.5 on severne 430 RDM. These are my first sails, so only real comparison was tushingham which I rented and were fine.

Only thing that annoyed annoyed me about them was the scant rigging guide, which for a newbie is really important! and the rigging measurements don't seem to be accurate. After somehelp I have figured it out and happy with the purchase, so I got two blades as well :-)
