A friend has just bought a 2013 Starboard Futura 111 Freerace board and wants to know what the best weed fin would be to suit the cutaways. Presently he has a Select 30 but is getting massive spin out. Would any of you WA sailors (particularly Safety Bay sailors who I believe use weed fins all the time) be able to provide some advice?
Many thanks

The recommended sail range for that board is 5.0 - 8.0, and the recommended fin range 34 - 44, so a 30 is too small although I have used a 31 weedy with success.
I usually use a 40 fin in mine (mostly with a 6.4), but a 36 would be better in stronger wind (but I don't have one).
I use the same depth of weedy as I would a pointer.
Brands? My 40 weedy is a Leading Edge, which you can't get anymore. I also have a Flying Objects Weedster which I like, and a Choco weedy which I also like. I don't like my JP weedy much.

I sail that board, same year and volume, and almost always with the Vector Slalom Weed. A quick fin that rarely let's go (usually my fault!) and a great finish. I've tried Selects and yeah.... Anyway the Chocos are good too but in the end it's personal preference. I use the 36 as an all round fin, but in hindsight the 38 would of been a better choice. Would be nice to have a 40 or 42 for the light days too. Anyway I've been impressed enough that all my weed fins are now vectors and the quiver is growing!

Thank you both for your prompt and informative replies. I will pass this info on.

Do either of you know any suppliers over there who could supply Vector and or Chocos?

I use vector weed slaloms in 32,34,36 & 40 in tabou mantas & rrd xfires. I am extremely happy with the fins. Jesper Orth is the distributor for vector and his mob is 0439 978 708

Some of the leading brands are just too blunt at the leading edge, whereas the vectors have a better entry profile.

I have just recently bought some Vector Slalom Weedies and am very, very pleased with the performance. Because the vectors are so chubby and powerful, I run the fins about 4cm shorter than the same size pointer that I would normally use in the board. The closest board I have to your friends Futura is my Falcon 113. I have purchased a Vector Slalom Weedy 34 for this board. I think that your friend's 30cm weedy is too small for that board.

See the recent weedy fin thread in the general section for more info - but importantly get your friend onto Jesper (contact details on above posts), he distributes Vector in Oz and lives in WA, and Jesper races at the highest levels and has input into the fin design and always has great info and advice
