Eagle 1090 Review
I have just changed from Axis ART series over to this brand/line-up. I was previously frustrated adjustments to make the ART series work - these foils are a good intermediate and entry level foil, but the better I got, the more I was noticing more issues. When really pushing the 799 I was often hesitant, as I knew at any point over 45kph the foil could just explode and often did. Tearing countless wings in spectacular crashes. Or when really banking a hard turn or going fast, the front wing tips would flex, this felt unsettled and not smooth.
I often felt I had to change down in foil size to get comfortable, and have experienced my fair share of swims after falling off too small a foil.
I've now been riding the Eagle for a good few sessions and am totally blown away, riding this foil with a 4'0 x 44L board and the 95HM mast. Initially this was bought as just a super light wind option, but I've carried this quite high in the range and never felt over powered ( c. 25-30knots).
This foil ticks every single box for me, and I've seen it prove itself in super light conditions - when I'm the only person on foil and very comfortably powered, able to still sail around when everyone is still floating. The height is unreal, the winglets let you really point hard, I've sailed in a very cruisy low mode beneath other riders and climbed well above, pointing much higher.
Glide is superb and I have no issues. A test of mine has been to historically try and pump back to the beach through a 500m+wind shadow. I often could get some distance, but would swim most of the way on the ART, I've never had to swim on the Eagle.
Speed is unreal, this foil is so balanced, I'm still adjusting to it all.
As mentioned I would be cautious when above 20 knots on the ART, as I knew at any point I could explode the foil. I previously tried -1 tail shim, speed tails and coke can strips on the front wing. But felt you fix one problem and sacrifice something else.
The Eagle just holds on, you can just keep pushing and pushing with nothing to fear, I'm now hitting very similar speeds to the 799 on a much bigger foil.
The liveliness is another huge perk, how responsive it feels is amazing, and yet I can still feel like I'm riding my surf skate. I can throw big turns, and I know I'll always be fine.
All in all, this foil is great - It is expensive in Aus, but I can't fault it. I spent much more on band-aids and trying the next latest foil to be equally let down or chasing a solution to new problems. I will look at getting a 790 soon, but for now, I'm having a blast!
I read your review with great interest as I am an Axis ART fan and have 899, 799 and 699 with 325p stab on advanced fuselage with 90cm HM mast.
What stabiliser did you use?
I also know a guy who is 120kg and has the 1099 and frequently does over 20kn to I think his maximum is 25kn with none of the issues you had.
