Improving water starts in heavy chop

All in all, yesterday was a glorious day of foiling at Rufus, but I could use a little tactical advice on waterstarts when conditions get heavy.

Rider and Equipment Setup:
Rider Weight: 82 kg
Board: 78 L Omen Emissary (semi-sinker)
Foil: Armstrong 780 HA v2 + 180 HA tail (no shim)
Mast: 72 cm Project Cedrus Evolution Wind (90 cm available)
Wing: 3.0 m (2.5 m available)

Location and Wind Conditions:
Location: Rufus (wind numbers taken from The Wall sensor upwind, as the Rufus meter is unreliable).
Session 1 (10:00 AM - 11:00 AM): ~21 kts average, gusts to 31 kts. Waterstarts were straightforward and manageable.
Session 2 (11:30 AM - 1:00 PM): ~27 kts average, gusts to 38 kts. Heavy, steep, short-period chop.

Current Waterstart Technique:
My current approach to getting onto foil in these conditions relies on a specific three-part sequence:
Gust and Wave Gap Timing: I wait for an incoming gust for initial lift, while simultaneously scanning upwind to ensure I am not about to get hit by a large set wave during the transition.

Standing and Building Momentum: Once on my feet, I focus on gaining initial forward board speed before attempting to fly the foil.

Pumping the Profile: I time the pumping cycle to coincide with either a relatively flat patch of water or by bearing down the downward ramp of a wave face to help accelerate the high-aspect foil past its stall speed.

The Problem:
While this technique works reliably in moderate conditions, it broke down during Session 2. Getting onto foil became an physical battle, taking up to 10 attempts on one occasion. The high stall speed of the 780 cm2 front wing combined with steep chop continually stalled the board's forward momentum before takeoff speed could be reached.

Note: Once on foil, I’m good, so the focus here is strictly on improving the success rate of the waterstart itself.

Questions for the Forum:
Mast Height: Would swapping from the 72 cm to the 90 cm mast aid waterstarts in heavy chop by keeping the front wing submerged in less aerated water during acceleration, or does the added length create too much drag prior to getting on plane?

Technique Refinements: Are there mechanical or positional tweaks to complement the timing routine above when trying to accelerate a high-aspect foil in heavy chop?

Sounds like you already have a good handle on things. The 72cm mast in bigger conditions won’t offer much in terms of advantages once riding but if you’re not breaching and control is not an issue, a 72cm will be a fair bit more reactive than a 90 (this may not be your goal). The 90cm will not be a problem getting going in powered up conditions and yes, you can ride the foil below aerated water, but you could easily do the same on the 72cm with a little dip down on the mast. Sounds like it’s more of a “time on water” experience issue. You may be overthinking things in high wind rather than naturally reacting to the forces you’re managing.

If your stalling the 780 then maybe the hand wing is lifting you to much when getting onto foil to early leading to a drop out. A smaller hand wing in wind like that might settle the take off a lot. The 780 actually has a pretty big bottom end.

A longer mast can help with stability also as it is just a big keel after all. It can allow you to be confidently canted over into the wind during take off. I am always surprised that anyone would ride less than an 80cm mast in bumps if turns are the game.

For me in big energy i want to go from knees to foil as quick as can be to minimize the chance of chop causing an unbalanced take off attempt.

I’m a similar size and riding similar gear and was also out there on the same day. 3m was a lot of power for those conditions but I’m not sure that was your issue. It was mega gusty so timing the gust was important. Don’t even start getting to your knees until the gust is there. The other thing that I find to be a little unique to the gorge conditions is that i need to point my takeoff more downwind than I do elsewhere and really work the wave face energy to get up. If you point too cross wind you are going to get thrown all over the place and your foil won’t be as efficient on takeoff. I kind of figured this out with the parawing but it applied to the wing too.

Crosswind is definitely bad news. My best takeoffs were skating down faces.

As usual, I can relate to this struggle...over 25kts and its a full on battle for me.

I also have better success with a more downwind start using wave energy to get me up.

As I think about my failures lately in high wind and big swell, I believe the wind and wing (and how I handle them) are making more of a difference than I thought before...

I want to get up fast so getting to my feet and getting on foil I seem to sheet it too much too quickly, then lean to windward to counter the strong pull of the wing and I'm often done for and fall to windward (I'll rush my foot placement too, which doesn't help). OR, if I stay centered, instead of falling to windward, I get launched (perhaps onto foil, perhaps falling off downwind).

One thing I'm not so sure about is how the swell is affecting the wind in my wing as I go from peak to trough, and how I might need to time/compensate for that.

Also, for me at 63kg, I'm getting blasted off the water even with a 2.5m on big days, and the power is so quickly and fully on/off, I think a 2.0m is the call (which is really the point of all this...justifying another wing).

This is an interesting point and I definitely notice it too. You get powered on the peak and then once you fall into the trough you lose power. This is exacerbated in the gorge where swell is generally really short period, so you need to grab power as you on the peak, get to your feet and start pumping the wing off the back of that swell, and then use the swell behind it to power the foil. The parawing is higher off the water so these spikes aren't as dramatic as they are in the wing.

I’ve definitely seen the ‘sheet in too quickly and fall to windward’ scene in my own progress - if you can call it that - waaaaay too many times.
