Hi All,
long time listener first time caller!
Looking for advice around downsizing my naish foils for wingsurfing.
I am in my 40's , weigh 78kg, have 5.5m and 3.5 Armstrong wings, a hover 110l board with a Jet 2000 front foil. I ride flat water in anything from 10-25 knots wind, can gybe and ride switch confidently. Aim is more wave riding in < head height waves which can be good, but mainly are onshore chop.
Thinking Naish Jet 1650 or HA 1400 (with corresponding recommended rear foils)
My understanding is that the jet range is supposed to be better turning in the waves but the HA has higher top speed and possibly more pump which sounds good for the flat days.
Has anyone tried both of these foils?
Dose the smaller size of the 1400 mean it might actually turn as well as a 1650 jet?
I found the 2000 foil fantastic for learning but top speed now a limiting factor. Is the 1650 significantly faster?
Is the much difference in the speed at which these 2 foils (ie 1650 vs 1400) start lifting for initial take off?
Cheers,
Mangawhai
I have used them.. and I think you will find the 1650 similar slow and draggy feel to the 2000..
I'd recommend the HA1400 or even better the HA1240.
I'm 80 kg, my largest Naish HA is the 1240, no need for anything larger. I can wing on a 5mtr from 13 knots, I guess a larger wing might get you going a knot sooner, but more drag.
Thanks David John and Airsail, great to hear your experienced views.
Was worried the 1400 might be too big a step down in size for me but now I have the dilemma of 1400 vs 1240! ha ha. Should probably stop agonising and just buy one.
Cheers
If you want to progress from your Jet 2000 to the HA1240 the HA1800 might be a good middle ground foil for you.
I love my HA1800 and you will find it very different to your Jet 2000.. It's much faster and less draggy but still has early lift and stability like your 2000.
Hi Mangawhai,
I'm 75K, using the Naish 5.3 wing, and currently an 85L Naish Hover. Started five months ago on the Naish 110L Hover with a Jet 2000 foil set.... after a few weeks I felt I couldn't hold down the Jet 2000, so went down to the Jet 1650. No noticeable difference in top speed, but I could more easily control the foil, less breaching, and more carving. but still wanted more 'glide' and less drag/more speed. Tried the HA1240 today, was surprised at 1/ it's early 'foil up' speed, although it seems better to let it rise up gradually, keeping the nose down until board speed picks up. 2/ it is noticeably faster and more slippery through the water. 3/ it seems more locked into a direction, less carvey, but think I might need to relax more, and allow the foil to do it's stuff.
So as David John suggests , the HA 1240 might be a good choice.
Agree w above..1240HA can handle head high, my 1800HA can handle rib so there's your interpolation. ;)
You'll be surprised how quick the 1240 comes up.
What did you go for in the end, in a similar thought process myself right now.
Started on 1800 HA and now being led down trading in for the 1240 HA

Thanks for all helpful comments.
haven't managed to get hold of anything yet. Very limited stocks here in NZ at moment and Covid-19's making deliveries slower than ever. I think I'll go for the 1400 as I do want to retain some ability to fly in light winds.
HI All,
6 months later and I have had the 1400 HA for about 4 months and about 20 sessions so thought id feedback.
1400 took me 2 sessions to get used to and am now looking forward to the 1240 especially for waves. Haven't noticed much difference in light wind take off compared with the 2000 I had and the higher cruising speed seems to give just as long glides while turning but with tighter turns.
All in all a great front wing.
Probably need to drop my board size now.. 78kg so looking at a board about same volume. Options Naish Hover 75 vs 85 or the alien looking new PPC Soar boards in 68 vs 82l. Any one used either??
