Waist. And not only in the waves. Having both hands free helps on flat water too. E.g. when riding in extreme light wind it's easier to paddle to the wind line, or when riding without a board leash it's easier to swim and catch the board if needed.

I am using a couple of wrist leashes but have found that the coiled poly type are better for damping high loading on my arm in crashes or gusts. The thin tape type with a bungee inside have often snapped out and shock loaded my arm. For that reason and having recently bought a waist harness I think I am going to try board and wing on the waist harness. Getting it all tangled is the worry.

I've been worked in overhead waves a few times with this setup and so far so good except for the stock wing leash that broke. Bungee spectra leash to the wing now

Hey great idea to have longer board leash! Needed that yesterday as I was trying to get out and later come in through never ending shore break!

Same, except ... Wing leash longer, in fact I add about 400mm of dyneema to a standard ozone leash. This way I can attach it to my harness belt at the back and have the leash behind my head 90% of the time.

Based on today's experience: waist leash!
Arrived at the beach to find out that waves were breaking all over the place. Tried to work my way through the white water and breaking waves. Have to mention that I'm talking beach break on sandbars with wave periode of 4 to 7 seconds and 3 to 4 lines of sandbars on your way out with a gradually sloping sea bed.
After wrestling the board through the white water, back wash and rogue waves to get to >1 metre depth, I tried paddling the board out, with my wing an wrist leash. Wind was not very strong so the wing stuck to the water, both limiting my paddle stroke and forward speed.
I could get to the breaking point, only to be pulled back in again by the wing that got caught by the wave/white water. Or my board corking away in the breaking wave. Not having footstraps and weraing gloves didn't help.
After about 15 minutes of failed attempts I let myself float back to shore. Attached my wrist leash to my waist leash. and tried again. I could paddle better and was more able to hold my board.
I did make it beyond the first break, but the session sucked anyway, because I couldn't get on foil fast enough to make it beyond the second break. I got washed 6 times on the 2nd bar before I decided to call it a day.
