Is Gopro camera the best? If so what would I expect to pay for the latest model and where is the best place to get one.

Hi Swannie,

The quality of the gopro images are really good. The surf hero wide 170 deg view seemed to be the best and thats what I ordered. Casso is the guy to ask I think he has used the system a lot.

I believe newcastle stand up paddle has them for about $265

NEWCASTLESUP
GOPRO HERO SURF WIDE ANGLE DIGITAL CAMERA
Our Price: $299.00
Sale Price: $265.00
You Save $34.00!

here is the link http://store.newcastlesup.com.au/SearchResults.asp?Cat=28

The Surf HERO is a wide angle camera that includes two removable mounting options. Included are a 3M stick-on base plate and FCS compatible plug mounting system. Both systems allow the camera to be quickly attached and removed from your surfboard.

Yeah, what OG SUP said.

A great little camera with excellent picture and video quality. It's specifically made to take surfing shots so the controls and functionality work well. Make sure you get the newer GoPro Surf Hero Wide. Most of the photos and videos on my site were taken with that camera. Check them out: www.CyberSUP.com

NewcastleSUP is the cheapest around and he provides great service.

So for about $40 more you can get it from a local retailer AND get all the local after sales that goes with it......

I use a glazier's suction cup thing (or car dent puller). I bolted the FCS attachment to that. Works a treat, super strong and you can swap between board and paddle, mid surf.

It's only been knocked off once when it hit the sand on the shorey. Two other times when I didn't suck it on correctly.

It does have a float now (water ski rope float) as it sinks like a brick without it. Sorry, that photo was taken before full product testing was conducted and the sinkability factor was established.

I got mine off eBay but apparently you can get them from places like AutoBarn or SuperCheap Auto.

Well mine turned up today so will have to talk my daughter into being the crash test dumby tomorrow to see what the footage turns out like.

I have the casso mount, the greenroom float and modified the gimble to allow for up down and left right.

What would we do without all the SB info? Make a lot more mistakes.

Thanks to all the guys for the great posts.

We are doing video from shore for training and using the footage from the boards for foot position etc . We combine the video with headzone comms and I think we have the whole shooting match covered.

Now all we need is a super computer to render it!!!!!!!!!

Hey Phill

Do you know if the newcastle shop supplies the 2GB card with the camera. Some shops do but I could not see it listed on their site or a contact number to ring. They are cheaper then other Aussie shops by about $20 but the others do include the SD card. I want to support a SUP shop though.

If you have a contact number that would be great.

Gpro Questions Continued:

This is the blurb from the internet:

"Designed for maximum convenience, simply press the shutter button on the paddle out and the Surf HERO will shoot TV resolution video or 5MP photos every 2 seconds for an hour while you surf. Once it starts shooting video or photos you can forget about it until it's time to review your footage at the end of your session."

Blurb from Gopro Site

Modes: video, standard photo, photo every 2 or 5 secs, 3x photo burst sequence, self timer, upside down photo/video flip

The instruction booklet with the camera says 5 second intervals and from matching the stills to the shore based video we shot it does look like 4 - 5 seconds?

Is anybody getting 2 seconds????

Does anyone know how to set it to 2 second mode???

On the average ride of say 10 - 15 seconds this makes a huge difference 5 - 7 shots per ride @ 2 sec intervals versus 2 - 3 @ 5 secs

Any feedback?

Regards

Phill

Casso that suction cup is about 4.5 inches across, correct?

Also, could you explain in a little more detail what you mean by "bolting the FCS attachment to that"? Do you mean the camera mount to the Suction cup? (I don't own a GoPro yet...) Is it as simple as drilling a few holes into the suction cup handle?

Cheers!

Hey Chris,

Yeah the sucker is about 4.5 inches in diameter (I can't measure it because it was stolen ).

I'll put together another eLearning lesson on how to build the mount when I get my new equipment (like this one I did for SuckerCam v1.0: www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=39965). In the meantime here's what I did for SuckerCam v2.1:

1. Place the FCS camera mount on top of the fixed part of the sucker's handle (making sure the tongue of the FCS mount is flush with the side of the handle).
2. Drill a hole through both the FCS mount and the sucker's fixed handle.
3. Place a stainless steel bolt (and washer) through the hole with the head on the inside.
4. Place a stainless steel washer and nut (anti-shake-off, nylon threaded version) on the bolt and tighten.
5. Attach the camera to the FCS mount.
6. Attach a safety string between the camera and the sucker.
7. Use a nylon cable tie to attach a waterski rope float to the sucker (somewhere where it will not hinder opening and closing the sucker).
8. Away you go.

Note: Make sure the bolt is as small as possible so it doesn't extend too far from the handle - creating a safety hazard.

This unit can now be sucked and unsucked easily from any smooth surface, nose of board, back of paddle blade (a bit heavy but doable), underneath of board (high resistance but doable), top of your head (if bald and flat). Changes can be made mid session so different angles can be obtained for the one movie.

I dont think so - I'm pretty sure it's got the unique GoPro fitting at the top.

That is some great info Casso! I'm going to order the suction cup off ebay and follow your directions. Much appreciated.

Cheers!
