robby naish once said - seat harness is for beginners, waist harness for professionals fairdinkum!

i think that those who wear the waist like it because it frees up your leg movements, raises the hook a bit so u can get in and out quicker, and keeps you more upright over the board for wavesriding and tricks etc. so you don't end up in the toilet stance

jord070, depends on your build, I went from a flying objects seat harness to a cabrinha waist harness. Found it to be as handy as a wooden leg in a bush fire. mongrel to keep, or get tight enough to stop it riding up all the time. Lent it to another w/surfer who has a few more years experience than me, he came back with same opinion.Painful to use.
So went back to seat harness. Maybe it was just the cabrinha type I am not sure.
But in the end its all down to preferance. Try before you buy.
And yes I switched after one and all convinced me waist was the way to go

I learned on a seat - used it for years. Tried a flying objects waisty, an older model and it was uncomfortable so I went back to the seat. Then I tried a Da Kine (Taboo I think is the model name). Its a beauty and I no longer use the seat, however I haven't used any sails bigger than a 7.2 for a couple of years now. I think the seaty is better for big sails. They do enable you to sit in the harness better. Waisties do ride up. Its pretty much down to preference I think.

i was joking about the beginner thing btw

although i use a waist they rub on my love handles in severe choppy conditions, but if i tolerate it for long enough i get calices

NotWal - i've got a dakine tabou too and like it very much, especially for an el-cheapo $90 model

I learnt using a seat harness but since all the pros used a waist harness I thought I'd better try it. The first time I used it, the first few times for that matter, I was like wtf is this crap but once you get used to it you'll never look back. Waist all the way.

i've tried one of those too Jordo, and they seem to be quite comfy. The only issue is there is no where to tuck the excess webbing on both sides and so they flap around a bit while sailing, however; it seems to have more floatation than my dakine one

Oh and the harness has a quick release and a system that never allows the spreader bar to ride up
The reason why waist harness ride up is because they havent been fitted correctly

According to Dave White:

"If you haven't got a waist, you haven't got a choice"

I don't got no waist, still use a waist harness though! If you're considering getting a kitesurfing harness (which tend to be stronger as not many windsurfers do dingle dangles) then be aware that windsurfing and kitesurfing hooks are different. When you're twisted up underneath the sail after yet another catapult then a kiting harness can be a bit more hassle when getting the lines off

Hey Jord, changed over a while back to waist, I got no waist, so I'm a XS. I found it easier to use a waist with a little getting used too, kinda feels easier to sail with, esp in the stronger winds. Although I'm using lines that are too small, I'd rather it too the seat. Personal preferance all the way, that and some mixing with what kind of sailing your doing.

And speaking of prices... I managed to trade in my seat for a waist at the same price I got it from Reg, good guy!

I use a seat harness with high boom and long lines. Its what i'm use to. I think it's because when i first started using newer gear of my older brother, he had set it up for himself and i just hopped onto it when he was resting. So now i'm use to having a high boom. I don't know why i use a seat over a waist. Probably because it was my older brother again and i just borrowed everything of his when i started to move to newer gear. I remember the first day i used a harness i was stoked though because it was so much easier.

Hey Jord

I still use both

I started using waist this season.

Seat for just B&F blasting in lower winds.

Waist for a bit more free feeling on may smaller boards stronger winds heavy chop - love the feeling of the waist in B&J conditions.

I also use both . Waist For Wave , B+J,Blasting and Seat on my Formula kit . The waist frees up your hips , allows a more upright stance so it,s far more suited for manouver oriented sailing . The more locked in stance and the extra power you can generate from a seat harness I find much better for the big rigs on Formula . I actually tried a waist on my Formula with a 10.7 last week and found I was using my arms a lot more and got tired really quickly .
So for me it,s waist on small stuff and seat on big stuff .

Or you can have the best of both and try a Da Kine XT seat which has a waist high hook for waves and a seat to stop it riding up when you using larger sails. You can also adjust the hook up or down.

No secret Jord
In what situation are you refering to? Jumping over a wave or jumping while wave riding? I guess your talking wave jumping? The key is heaps of speed, look at the section you want to hit, unhook just before you hit the wave (Or stay hooked in. Starting out I think unhooking would be easier) Head slightly downwind but not too much as you may send yourself into a forward loop while doing the next few steps... then as you are jumping, bend your knees and lift you feet up under your butt. Keep the sail sheeted in, sheeting out will cause you to fall sooner, but dont over sheet as this may send you forward if your body weight is too far forward. Im guessing at this point is the answer to your question? I will let someone else finish with the description of the landing and add any other key points I have missed with the set up and launching into big airs
