the story I heard was that a gust took the poor guy into parked cars, up into overhead powerlines and then back to ground. this was at rockingham. very very sad.

Hate statistics, but my man in the East reckons that's the first kite death in Oz.

condolances to all.

question.
i have been talking obout this at work.
they say dont go kiting in lightning storms as the carbon rods will conduct the lightning and electricity, but will it travel thru the lines or will it just fry them?
also if u hit power lines will it just fry strait thru the lines or will u fizzle?
i hope i am not offending anyone, just merely wondering for my own safety, and others.

it is a very gusty day.....

just saw news update for whats on tonight and leading story was...

"... tragic death of father in freak kitesurfing accident..."

thats all i got though

caution: lighting will fry you :)

not sure about powerlines id guess (depending of course on voltage!) that you wouldnt get much of a shock until you earth the lines... which you invariably do when u crash on the ground...?

hoping to get a copy of the channel 10 report converted to divx later tonight...

wipika kite, white and light blue... couldn't tell the size maybe 11.2m? (is that 11.2 flat or projected for wipikas? anyone know?)

they implied he was still in harness (and attached?) when attended to by emergency personel?

just watched the abc report on it and they implied he "... fell out of ... the harness ..."

Very sad news I just saw it on the news, I am sure our thoughts are with his family. It is a reminder unfortunatly of the potential dangers of this sport. Please always be aware of current weather conditions and other users of the area it can all change so rapidly.

i hope this is not considered rude talking about how he passed away but just to reply to queries...I think that it was the initial impact of colliding with cars and the shop that was responsible. if you see images of his kite, it appears to be in perfect condition...if electricty passed through it, it would have been much worse condition than it was...especially something as delicate as rip-stop nylon.

My condolences to his family and friends.
Please let it be a lesson to us all. We all forget that kiting involves great responsibility, and kiting in yesterday's highly unpredictable conditions was not.

That spot is quite onshore in a northerly isn't it? That's probably his first mistake.
I've come into all sorts of problems in an onshore puff.
