When the waves are bigger, I use my Quobba Mixed Thruster set..... 4.7" sides and a 4.5" center.

I have had a lot of both the XXX and TR3 and for the first 5 years, I was between 107 and 110 kg until a year ago.
Never had any compressions and have really only managed to put small dings in a few boards in the past 10 years.
No difference between XXX and TR3 from my experience.... and all of my boards have been TR3 for the past 4 or 5 years.

I can't remember the last time I installed rail tape on any board.

Rick what's the main differences between the Steeze and the Shorty ????

Phil

Everything

I surfed my 9'5 Steeze like a longboard with slow, carving turns.... I liked it for mellow style surfing.
The Shorty is much snappier and loose.... faster.

They look similar, but IMO they are very different boards

Hi Micro

Welcome to the wonderful world of SUP surfing!

I don't spin toward the beach to catch waves.
If the wave is at 12:00 on a watch face and the beach at 6:00, I stand outside with my nose aimed roughly at 2:00
I sit just slightly wide of where I plan to catch the wave
When my wave comes, I start paddling on my left side and never switch paddle sides.
I time my paddle so my board has turned to the desired angle as the wave arrives.
This eliminates over turning as I paddle for the wave... and the need to switch paddle sides.
That switch will cause me to miss the wave in many cases as it upsets the trim speed as I paddle for takeoff.

If you go to my YouTube Channel and watch almost any video, you will see me doing this because I usually include some paddling for waves in most videos.

It becomes natural as you adjust to SUP surfing from prone.... enjoy the ride!

Great tip thanks. I've watched a few of your vids & they're great.
I also notice your front foot is pretty much locked in & you shift just the back. Is that because most of your boards are shorter?

Thanks for your feedback on my YT vids, I greatly appreciate that!

On most of my boards I simply move both feet back a bit when I take off.... that puts my back foot over the sidebites and my front just behind the handle so it doesn't have to move very much.
I ride boards from 8'5 to 12' but mostly 8'8 to 9'2

Hi greatsup

Been on the road from Florida to Cape Cod all week, visiting SUPsters, so I was offline for a while.

It's true that Twin's are designed quite differently from the Ghost Up, but for some reason it simply works really well with a pair of Twin Fins in small to medium surf.
When it gets juicier, I add a 3.6" center and move up to a 4.5" center when it gets overhead.

I have quite a bit of footage of the Ghost Up in gutless Florida surf and only a few days of head high with more juice since I didn't get my Ghost Ups until I was on my way to Florida last Fall.
Since it is designed to handle more serious surf, I didn't want to publish only videos of it in waist high weakers.... so I wait for some New England juice.
Casso has some great footage of him ripping on his Ghost Up in some good surf.

Here are some links to Florida waves
Small and gutless with Ghost Up running 6" twin Fins.... doesn't do much other than show how it snaps around in tiny's

Nice OH session but only Hat Cam video.... I included some 3' clean SoloShot clips as well to show a bit more of the Ghost Up

I apologize for my lack of serious Ghost Up video's but the surf has been lackluster since I got them

My cheap set of fiberglass Twin Fins from AliBaba ... around $25 USD 5 years ago

Hi obiJohn.

Can you tell me how much you weigh ?

I currently ride. 9’”3 smik hipster twin 153 litres and I’m about 98kg in wetsuit. Intermediate skill, surf about 2x a month in 1-3 fairly mushy surf.

thinking of moving to ghost and trying to decide if to go 9’1 which is 150
litres. Or to go with 9’3 ghost ?
any advice ?

Hi London

We talked a while ago, so I have all your stats.
My question would be, are you more comfortable now on your Hipster Twin, or still having issues in chop?

If you are comfortable and you want to drop down in size, the 9'1 Ghost has good volume and widths for an intermediate SUPster.
If you are looking for more stability a that you can turn from the middle, then I would go 9'3 Ghost.

All these boards have good stability and volume.
Comfort is relative..... some people never like to fall over, then there's me,,, I fall all the time but it doesn't bother me, so I ride the 8'5 Ghost and 8'8 Ghost at 78 years old. The more time I spend on a board, the less I fall because our bodies adapt quite quickly to increased demand.

Please ask any specific questions or issues you would like to discuss.

Peace
Rick Weeks

Hi Alex

I spent a great winter riding your break.... love the Wall crew!

I have a 9'2 x 30 Shorty and really like it!
Been a long time since I was into longboard SUPs but I find the Shorty to be snappy and fast.
It will also handle the bigger days you get at the Wall.

My video on it is limited by some pretty weak Florida breaks this winter and when it was good, I was always on the Ghost or Ghost Up.

There are some great videos on FB by some young rippers on the Shorty....check out the SUP surfing page or search for the "Longboard SUP revolution" page

Peace

Hey Rick. Did you have anymore feedback on the Up vs the creek?

I was looking at a smaller wave agile board like the hipster twin, or twin pro- but an 8’1 Up has landed in my country which I’m now debating.
Casso said he prefers the Up even in smaller junkier waves? Which surprised me, but has me intrigued.
I also have a Smik spitfire pintail 8’2 at 107l, so the 98l 8’1 Up should be a bit more refined and agile?

Thanks for contacting me via text... it was good talking Ghosts!
The Creek has always been a super solid board in all surf.... handles size and juice with ease,
These days I prefer the way the Ghosts surf... easy, fast and snappy.

Having never ridden any SMIK, I can't compare them to the Ghosts.

The Ghost Up is a great one board quiver.... although it was designed to handle size and power, it turns out to be a great small wave board as well.
I ride it as a Twin Fin when the waves are smaller or fatter, Twin with 3.6" Trailer fin if medium juice and Thruster when it's game on.
Today was nice clean surf, so I went thruster but the tide was filling in so I should have gone Twins because the waves got fat as the sun came up.

Love all the detailed feedback on your Ghost John, thank you!

I ride all my Ghosts and Ghost Up's with 6" Twins as front sides and 3.6" center (4.5" in more juice)

Because my hamstrings are always subject to pulling or tearing, I gave up putting the nose over a wave when paddling out.
I simply ride up the face that is hiding under the foam and simply pop through the back as I rise up the face.
Now I only do this on smaller waves or soft waves, but it works very well and doesn't set me back much as I pass the wave.

The pic below is a very small wave, but it shows the nose slipping under the foam and popping out the back
