Mentioned this thread to the wife - her response "tell your sb friends that you can't have proper veggie soup without celery." Probably props up subasurf's comment re; "roughage" in that it's cheap/easy to grow & filled bellies in the depression years.

Who am I to argue?

I'm just recovering from dengue fever and this thread was some inspiration to make a big pot of veggie soup (complete with celery) as my first 'meal' in more than a week.Soup never tasted so good!

^^^ Now you're just being silly - those things are for throwing at fighting cats in the middle of the night - "not for human consumption".

In the Age last weekend there was an article about the " Brussell Spout Renaissance" lot of trendy restaurants in Sydney and Melb are now serving the spout up, par boil chop in half then fry or in the oven served with a sweet dipping sauce, there were recipes that had me virtually salivating, never say never ok

The prob with sprouts is it is not cold enough in OZ, my grand dad used to grow a few plant of them in Switzerland and collect them after they had frost marks on them, I loved it was so soft and not bitter at all, just boiled and then pan fried in butter with speck (euro bacon). Was a meal by it self, or with a sweet sauce to be side dish to venison!
I tried to freeze it and cook but they stay bitter and hard!
