Anyway of all the cars made in Australia today, if I was going to buy a new one it would be a Falcon or maybe a Territory coz the straight six is a great engine and they look heaps better than the Commodore or the Toyotas.

If you want one of them straight sixs you might better buy it soon. I read somewhere that Ford was going to discontinue them and use the "Global V6" ie the same one fitted to Commodores.

My old man still has his unplated XY in the shed. We did at least 10 trips accross the Nullaboor in that car.

The bench seat once saved my life - long story but no seat belt on and an incident that saw me ping-pong back and forth between the back seat and the front bench 2-3 times instead of head first through the windscreen! Lucky.

3-on-the-tree and a 250cc straight six is not great for economy but really nice to cruise though.

BTW no power stearing or even power assist on the drum brakes all-round! Holy christ! You end up with over-developed forearms from bracing on the steering wheel for leverage on the brake pedal. Not lightweight cars to pull up in a hurry either.

Hey Cisco - just havin a laff BTW, I always like it when peeps enjoy and look after their wheels and keep em chuggin (housebrick or not).

You are right about those XYs being a brute of a car. I had one some years ago that had the run-out Canadian 302 Windsor and a C4 box. A beautiful cruiser but not one to throw around.

Even Brock said when he eventually drove an XY GT, he didn't know how Moffat, Johnson and the others kept them on the track!!!!

Are you sure it's the same V6? I think GM and Ford sharing a motor is very unlikely. Just based on the marketing problem it would cause if nothing else.

It would make much more sense if they were talking about Ford's global V6 as the replacement for the inline six. I think Australia is the only market where they use an inline six and they were trying to decide if it was worth continuing to update the same engine or go with an imported V6.

You are probably right. I have heard that the only real difference between the Supercars now is the engine, gearbox and body shell. Apparently all have the Watts Link rear end now.

Well when you are talking V8 touring cars, it's a different thing. I wouldn't be surprised if the only thing they didn't use the same was the body shell (well the bits that they weld onto the space frame anyway).

I don't know if they use the same motor though. Again it would be a difficult marketing problem.

Ford would somehow manage to produce an inferior car - even with the same donk!

Depends what you define as inferior. The fact that GM still insist on using 70's pushrod engine technology would point the finger at them as being the inferior brand.

And I'm pretty sure the VE commonwhore still holds the dubious title of being the most recalled mass produced car in Australia. Not to mention the rather large rate of depreciation of commodores compared to falcons....pretty packaging but not much else

The Aussie Falcon...

Whats Aussie about Falcons?

As far as the current model goes, nearly all of it! Aussie designed and made engine, chassis, body style, assembly etc etc I'm sure there is plenty of switch and running gear that is sourced from overseas Ford parts bins but essentially it is an Aussie car

As far as the engine being changed to a V6 in the Falcons, that was the case but not anymore. It has had a stay of execution and is destined to be continually fitted and refined for Falcons and Territory's for many years to come.

It's funny that people assume that pushrods are inferior. You would think that if they were truly inferior that GM wouldn't use them. They do use overhead cams in other engines so it's not really a difficult thing for them to do.

When Holden went from the Nissan (OHC) 6 cylinder to the 'Buick' V6 in the VN commodore they went with the V6 because it was cheaper, but it also made more power, was more fuel efficient, and was lighter than the Nissan 6 it replaced. Hmmm... inferior in what way?

It was suggested at the time that Ford only added an overhead cam to their 4.1/4.0 engines to give it marketing appeal.

When GM designed the GEN3 V8 engine from a completely clean design brief, they went with pushrods because it met their design objectives. They had the choice to do anything they wanted, but overhead cams were no advantage to them.

I have to laugh at a few people who I used to work with that would insist that a car was better because it had overhead cams but couldn't tell me what it meant or why it was better.

I have both a Commondore and a Foulcan, but you would have to wonder if the Commodore was the most recalled car because they sold so many more than Ford did. That's a good problem to have I think.

Are you sure about the depreciation differences? The reason I have a Falcon is that the same year model Commodores were selling for a few thousand more. IMO they are not that different, so why not get the Ford.

Wasn't there a bit of government incentive behind it as well?

It was a funny sort of issue though in that they had to spend money to update the V6 or the I6 to meet emmission requirements, so there couldn't have been too much in which way they went.

Had a XR8 a few years back...best car I've ever had...besides the ol' Valiant Regal! Now that was classy...needed an intercom to talk to the passengers in the back, and my mates reckoned it looked like a speedboat when I took off! Haha - memories....

Ha ha - with my $$ it is Toyota 1st, Holden 2nd, Ford waaaaayyyyy back down the list. I don't wish to waste my money and have driven recent (standard) versions of these 3 makes and rate it from that.

I'll stick with my Toyota and smugly drive past 1st the many Fords broken down and then the odd Holden too..
