I am wanting a change of career so I have applied for a few different jobs and got a phone call to go to an interview this morning. I get all dressed up to go to this interview (as everyone does) and when I get there I was told, "You look way too nice for this job"?????????? WTF is up with that????

I am thinking that maybe if I was wearing something that showed off my 4 tattoos, like a singlet and jeans, and I didin't wear makeup or do my hair, I may have actually got this particular job.

How can someone just judge you because of the clothes that you wear??? They don't know me from a bar of soap, so how could they comment on whether I am too nice for the job? (the job was an Assistant Nite Club Manager by the way)

Thanks Liz, Yep It's crap. I have been given plenty of reasons for not getting a job, but, not getting a job because I look too nice is insane.

Would hazard a guess that he was indicating that he was surprised that a fine upstanding person like you, wanted to work in the night club environment. Its not the easiest role to take on.

Sorry, I've never had this issue, I've just changed jobs from a joinery workshop -old, torn, glue-coated overalls and 'king gee' shorts, to a building design job in an office with others wearing slacks/shirts! (I've been told I need to go shopping!)

I must admit, from an employer's point of view, if you're TOO HOT!!! maybe you would distract the other workers?

Not much of a consolation for the knock back, but at least you got a compliment out of the interview....hang on, I just saw that it was a chick! Bit of ol' green-eye maybe???

It's a shame you didn't get the job, if that's the position you REALLY wanted.
But can you honestly say that you've never made assumptions about someone based on their appearance? Shallow, but true.
My guess is that you just didn't fit the image that the club is trying to portray. I think you can actually tell a lot about a person by their clothes, hair etc.
Also, many people are not skilled in interview techniques and the provision of honest, effective and constructive feedback.
Hope you find the position that's best for you.

I tend to get judged by my clothing. Usually as a slob. But i don't mind, because i pretty much am a slob. Faded boardies, faded shirts with bleach stains (seriously , i dont even us bleach???), clothes either too big or too small, because i never try anything on in the shops.

I reckon you mightve been lucky on that one. If that was their attitude then only bad things wouldve followed.
Just recently we had a new girl join our firm. Now Im talking serious glamour (in fact she was Miss Lebanon) but very naive and totally spoilt. She wore the shortest skirts and skimpiest tops Ive seen. Within a week the blokes had started to constantly flirt with her and the females were starting to get seriously pissed off. It got to the point that there started to be comments about sexual harrassment, catty and nasty comments etc etc. In fact a few guys were told to pull their heads in or face the consequences.
She left without knowing what all the fuss was about and probably has no idea of the s***fight she started.
Not saying that your like that (obvioulsy you have to be completely normal to be on here ) but I think karma saved you from that one.

Hey Surfinchick, it's been a while!!! I can see your point, but to be perfectly honest, I don't think I have ever judged someone just by the clothes that they wear, I have always lived by the "never judge a book by it's cover" philosophy.

I really want to get into management/payroll/bookkeeping as I have all the qualifications. Maybe the night club job was just not for me and as you all keep saying "I have probably dodged a bullet".

Notwal, unless the prospective boss was into water sports, I don't think that would be a great idea, even though it is very comfortable too.

I think I will just keep applying for jobs and fingers crossed I can land a position in the field I want to be in!!!

Then that would be some lame boss!

Surround yourself with people who can do what you can't and you'll get places. I'm more than happy to employ people smarter than me.....of course, none of them look as good.

I'm always judged by what i wear the clothes make the man so to speak I'm a tradie i wear king gee shirts &shorts in fatigue so there iron & pressed on hanger seven sets makes life easy but what really gets up my nose is that i have a hearing problem a bit deaf so people treat me like I'm mentally retarded hey i windsurf I'm more interested in the wind forecast than any ball games mention that too customer dressed as Steve Irwin that makes me even more retarded I work for myself &dont count but still i think the fact your on seabreeze makes you destined for better things you push your individuality and aim higher don't apply for the job you know apply to the job you want that pays people only learn by striving dress up look up .

There's still plenty of work ( apparently ), especially in book-keeping, payroll and the like. The main issue will be how to get out of the office when the wind comes in at about 3pm -- after the several assaults and one shooting at the local nightclubs here this weekend you're probably better off not in one.
