Got a phone call from the missis this morning, she was on her way to a new mums exercise group. "I've got a flat front tire!!" She said...Now I am gutted because I just put a brand new set of Muds on the ute! I said "you have to be kidding, what were you doing!!!" I offer to drive to town and change the tyre I was pleasantly surprised when she said it's the pram tire! I laughed my head off... She still wasn't impressed because she missed her warm up walk.

I have now fitted some thick thorn proof inner tubes.

Have you ever seen 15 mums walking prams down the road in a line? I think it must be a sight... They don't call it pram fit for nothing!!

There's a gaggle of them that meet regularly in the park opposite me, They then head off down the footpath with their prams yackin away in their rebok/ nike gear. Funny to see but I guesss its good for em too.

Sorry to hijack...but this thread bought back memories

As a new dad chatting with the Mums in the park.

I commented on how silly it was to have disc brakes on prams.

The reposnse from one mother
"but what if the pram gets away from you?"

Not being able to stop being a smart arse (and thus banishing myself from the Mummys group for the 8 weeks I had off) I replied

"Well if the pram gets away from you the disc brake will apply itself[}:)]"

Resume normal reposnses

You've got to think long term.
In a few years when the pram days are done, they can be recycled into the best hill trolley wheels,. with disc brakes no less.
Man,..what I would have given for disc brakes on some of our hill trollies.
We used to live next to a big hill and there were numerous injuries due to a complete inability to stop when we had to.

Come to think of it, I never see hill trollies any more. ?
They were the best fun.
Hours and hours spent making them. Finding parts, rough designs, hammering nails and fingers, blood blisters, swearing,.. and then the initial test drives where everthing would sometimes fall apart . Back to dad's workshop and start again.

oi Pweedas!!

ask Chook, Landyacht and the Lake Lefroy/Esperance landyachting crew to take you on thier next trip to Norseman.

landyachts without sails make the ultimate hilltrolleys when there is no wind.

The old days of pushing a pram. Oh the memories

My best was when you were at the Royal show and people who pissed you off (mostly just because i was tied and pissed of with pushing a pram) but you could slam them in the back of the leg with the pram wheel, they'd go down like a sack of spuds jump to there feet and immediately start to apologize

hehe that never got old

pweedas, sounds like you had a similar childhood to mine
I lived on a steep hill too; neighbours near the top of the hill had a steep driveway. We would take our 'go karts' to the top of their driveway when they were out, wait for the 'no cars coming' signal from the lookout kid at the bottom of the driveway and let gravity do it's thing....
Brakes were optional; discbrakes were unheard of....

Ahhhh,.. ya poooor thing! Another poor soul with a disadvantaged childhood.
No wonder some children end up turning to crime for a bit of excitement.

The best billycart I made had wheels from a small BMX mounted each side of the seat (seat was plastic from school), for the front wheels I used some that were cannibalised from a push-action mower...

That thing flew! Almost no friction at all. And having bike wheels meant that I could put bike brakes on it

Eventually I took a corner too fast and the mountings for the wheels collapsed, meaning the wheels leant over and scraped half the skin of my arm off.

Fun times

Just a small question. How fraking fat does a baby have to be that disc brakes are needed?

You do see some fat babys kicking around... Sparked up some good converstation!! Thanks for the ideas, I will definitly re use these wheel on my son's first billy cart... Probably just use a piece of timber hinged onto the tire for breaks, And put a crash helmit on his noggin.

I remember being at an organised scouts billy cart event as a kid. The Dads found one of the steepest hills in Wellington and sent the kids flying down the hill... Untill there was a serious rollover, an ambulence actualy attended... Event was put on hold untill they found a boring gentle gradient to finish the day off...

They should push the pram train up lots of hills. That would look after the BMI of both the mums and the kids.

Our scout troops(Mirrabooka district) used a section of Warwick? road that had recently been realigned, leaving a beaut long bitumen downhill stretch.
Local council dumped several truckloads of dirt at the bottom for us to run into, and a couple of chicanes half way down.
My kart had flash big golf buggy rear wheels and its front wheels even had proper "bought from a shop" bearings (hammered) into them.
Going through the chicanes peeled the tyres off the rear rims, it was a rather memorable experience going sidways at 657654678696mph on steel rims, and hitting the dirt at the bottom of the hill.

timber 4 x 2 rollcages actually hang together
took the remains home, bolted a holden generator and 12v battery to it, with toaster elements as a speed controller, pushy wheels at the back and derailler chains/ cogs for gears.
me and my accomplices got busted on Coolibah Drive in Greenwood opposite the high school.
We got a REAL BIG SERIOUS lecture from a pretty cool copper over that episode.

^^^ and ya know what Stephen? Kids now think cos they did that on Mario Kart that they have 'done it'

They have no idea.... how to build a billy kart or what you are talking about with powering one, and if they tried - some social worker somewhere would criticise the parents

Classic - coffee (take the hazlenut icecream seperate myself re-mocha afrogato) and prams / carts..

real wheels4a cart - right luxury - our cheese (named after the wooden boxes) carts used bearings from knackered truck gear boxes (lived in 3rd world country!!) used wedges to hold them on to the axle (think flat bit of wood here)... noisy - u bet - sparks and slides on corners - oww yeah - brakes - when the wheel came off - very effective!!
When we went to England to live - straight to the dump - pram wheels - old golf trolley wheels and shopping trolley wheels - spoilt for choice - the first crash was a ripppppper - ouch the memory still hurts (place called Harrow on the Hill - fairly steep!!) - brakes became a feature after that!!

where is this coffee shop float??
KiwiWill
When used to ride to work in Melbourne CBD - (think tram city - sharp s_it on the corners of tram tracks till U learn!!) - used to get a mylar armor layer to sit betwix tube and tyre - worked a charm.
Last pram we had (Grizzly 4 seater!!) had solid wheels (Think twins, 1 elder kid and some shopping - did have a brake - but remember being happy getting pulled after an up hill push!!

Cheers
