So now most of us in this chat are aware that the Ningaloo pastoral coast is run with tourism as the primary income . Why they run goats ? The reasong are two fold. Firstly they have to maintain stock to keep in accordance with the terms and conditions of a pastoral lease. Whilst once declared vermin (1976 ag dept) are now an acceptable form of income that is protected by legislation. I would suggest to these people undertaking goat farming on the Ningaloo coast too have s good think about the damage they cause to the market price they get for them. Then count the growing number of tourism bums on seats on our coastline. Landholders it's time to think

What evidence do you have that they are "running goats"? There are wild goats all over this state, in quite large numbers in places. There are also foxes, rabbits, cats, dogs, etc, etc. Do you have the same problem with people down south "running rabbits" on their farms in the cape-to-cape area? Is it their responsibility?

It'd be pretty hard to eradicate goats, and wouldn't bring much monetary value I would think (if any. In fact I'd think it'd be a big cost to employ professional shooters). And what does a leaseholder do? If they rid their property, within months goats from neighbouring properties will invade.

A good post with some good questions that I will endeavor to answer . Most pastoral leases in the Upper Murchison and Gascoyne have diversified into running feral or rangeland goats since 2003 .In the last 10 years this area has suffered well below rainfall which is not conducive to keeping sheep at an optimum number per hectare. A sheeps diet differs from a goats diet . While sheep eat grass, buffel etc goats eat everything , 80 percent of their diet is browsed which means the fragile natives cop . Go and visit Ningaloo station drive north of the homestead and see for your self the aftermath of land that has been intentionally overgrazed by an irresponsible leaseholder and even worse done with impunity. People of the land must diversify when faced with on going poor seasonal conditions. The leaseholders adjacent to Ningaloo Marine Park are very lucky to be able to diversify into tourism . The financial benifits enjoyed by these lucky few . Running stock is not the primary consideration .possibly stock would be the furthest thing from their minds . Goats don't need any looking after and I believe that Gnaraloo and Quobba do a muster twice a year and are sent down to Geraldton for live export. The money they get for the goats is no where near enough to balance out the destruction they cause to the environment. These people are making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year from tourism and still choose to run vermin on their leases . The law needs to be changed to protect the terrestrial side of the park.

Yes part two , does anybody know if the environmental officer at Gnaraloo actually holds a degree in environmental science ? Or is it a backpacker working for free board and food to facilitate a visa extention ?.

These people ... choose to run vermin on their leases.

I don't think there's any choice in the matter. We had rats in the roof earlier this year when the neighbours decided to knock down their house. We didn't choose to have them and it was a PITA to get rid of them. Initially I thought we had mice because one found it's way into the kitchen. Put out some mice traps and twice one went off but no mouse and just a spot of blood. One night I was up late watching something on TV and snap! off goes the mouse trap. I went to have a look and it was a decent sized rat, but the mouse trap had obviously only stunned it. I quickly got together a plastic bag and scooped it up just as it was beginning to come back to life. Rat started squealing and squirming as I picked up his warm body so I was just in time. I took him outside and squashed his head in with a 6" x 2".

Anyway, I digress. The point is, you don't choose to run vermin, and controlling them is nigh on impossible. It would require an Australia-wide approach and would still fail. A bit like controlling cane toads.

The best idea would be to introduce lions. Once the lions eat all the goats, introduce polar bears. Once the polar bears eat all the lions global warming should kill them off.

Is there anyone out there that knows where Gnaraloo's environmental officer obainted her degree in environmental science?.

Hahaha. We had this one goat that kept breaking into our shack/hutt and ****ing our 5hit up...we build barriers and all but the bastard still got in. I was VERY tempted to slot it and cook it up. I was sick of eating fish by that point in the trip.

My mate had a knife at the ready and that look in his eyes...he is a Saffer after all

Maybe next time I'm up there I will. I've even most other land animals on this continent...why not a goat?

^^ Hind leg is best, wrap it in alfoil and dig a hole put the leg in, put some sand over the top and then build a fire (KLF) over the top of it and cook for a couple of hours. If we had of had fish with it as well that would have been awesome but we were inland so it wasnt an option.

I spent 6 months swagging through Martu land in the Pilbara a few years back, working for SBS. The amount of perfectly cooked meat I got to consume was out of this world.

Pretty sure i've provided evidence that there are no pastoral leases in the ningaloo world heritage area, secondly if there is a feral goat problem in the ningaloo marine park we have real problems.

Yeah, but has an almost spice like tingle to the taste...and it's super oily.
We ate a few snakes too, but yeah, they just taste like chicken. Shot a camel and cut some steaks off him too. Wasn't too bad.
One of the Abo guys I was with bagged a massive bush turkey. Didn't even know the thing existed until he spotted it and blew it away. Tasted like...well...chicken...durp

Poor thing had a young chick with it though...we didn't see it until after.

Aww shucks it's nice to be missed but I was out enjoying a nice lunch and a cheeky 2007 cab merlot with some friends.

I've done my best to educate you my little green friend but the fundamentals you keep getting wrong is basic geography, nothing more.

And for the record I have no association with pastoral lessees, production of any farmed animal or down stream processing. I'm a wee government employee who has many interests and hobbies, one quite high on the list is getting my high powered rifle out and killing vermin on farming/pastoral land.

But for now I'm done on this topic, we are going around in circles.

Y

Chis firstly you have said nothing that has furthered my education on this matter. Read your own posts you have said nothing of any substance that would facilitate a decent debate. You state that my geography is wrong , in what way ? Goats are being farmed on every station within Ningaloo Marine Park . Mostly opportunistic farming where the goats are already there . But why would these leaseholders want the status quo to change . Goats need no care , they don't need to be shorn it's money for jam. Even worse they breed twice a year all the lease holder has too do is muster and take mostly males to ensure there are plenty more goats at the time of the next muster. If you think this is fantasy or my geography is out of order I think you should pull your head out of the sand and do some research and then you and I will be able to have a decent discussion on this very important issue. I'm over the Moon my little green friends beat the Wallabies .
