Ive been driving past that camp for over a year , and im stunned at just how long its taking to build.
it may have cost 170mill but somebody somewhere is creaming off the top because all it is is a bunch of dongas, just like any mining or construction camp surrounde by absurd amounts of razor wire.
normally camps that size and quality would go u[p in a matter of weeks or months , but these contractors are dragging the job out to well over a year.
thats where most of your 170mill is going

Dead on the money there Landy, the group who did a number on that place allowing a $170mil price tag need to be jailed. Bloody five star camps at BHP, FMG Hedland, Newman cost considerably less
Karratha are getting a 6000 man camp for far less

Seen on the news last night, cost $ 170,000,000.00 to house 800 men???? no girls????

for how long?

Are you complaining that $170m is a lot of money or that the money to people ratio is too high?

If it's the former, then we need fewer refugees..

If it's the latter, then you need to put a time dimension in..

1. Answer: No. Cue was a town on the wheatbelt on the West Coast of Australia so he landed on the wrong side to get to it. It was also far too wide for a human to jump and so it was not physically possible.

2. Answer: No. The Aboriginies were, the wallabies had a terrible time trying to get rid of them and eventually gave up.

Hope this has helped.

I think the point is for $170mil you can build 1000 2 bedroom self contained units. (Edit: Govt land is free to the Govt, so 1000 HOUSES would be achievable)

They already had a fenced area with accomodation and admin buildings - it is the old army barracks.
All it needed was a facelift for the accomodation, not starting from scratch, and then add all the security stuff that goes with a detention centre.

Of course the facelift has been grossly excessive and it looks like a resort.

Yes conditions have to be humane but when schools have to fundraise for donations in the community to buy one aircon for a classroom that is a bloody donga (not even a real building), or they don't have anywhere near enough beds in E.D or mental health system..... then the Govt spending $170mil to renovate a facility is annoying to say the least.

How about giving the same amount of financial consideration to people and their families who experience mental illness? Or people experiencing homelessness through illness. Seems to me like 'charity' should begin at home, should it not?

That was the con camp Pats, transportable old style dongas. I am talking the latest ones which have no resemblance to the older style camp accommodation.
PS she wasnt a sod either RIP

Problem is Hamsta when you say things like that on this forum, you will be branded as a racist, xenophobic or some other tag because you dare to suggest we should not be spending so much tax dollars on illegal immigrants (if they have destroyed their papers, that is what they are).

Bloody sick of a majority saying these bloody crook queue jumpers are "refuges"
The low life queue jumpers bribe sleaze and connive their way though the system with ill gotten gains damaging the prospect of the "real" refuge stuck in a bloody camp some place, with no prospect in moving while these mongrels do him and her and their own, out of any chance of a new life. Dead set arseholes the lot of them, regardless of how they came, boat plane or bloody swam here

One thing that makes me laugh- Northam army camp was used after WW2 as an immigrant housing centre, with the old weatherboard barracks huts housing several families in each.
If the families wanted any privacy they had to string up blankets as walls. They froze in winter- and sweated all summer and were, by-and-large, thankful for it.
Many of these immigrants had no choice regarding where they worked- or in what trade, they went where they were told, and did what they were told as part of the conditions of thier immigration.

I dont know if the old barrack huts are still there- or if they would be in a fit state to use after all these years, but I fail to see why the taxpayer has to pay through the nose so a multinational company can make a fortune running a camp which is handed to them on a plate.

Do we really need to outsource everything- surely our federal govt. can actually run a campsite- if need be, just ask the military for some advice.
That 170 million dollars could have built the new Northam detention centre, plus employ more federal police- and the feds could run the whole thing themselves.
Run it on the same principal as our prison farms- our convicted criminals work on the farms to feed the other prisons, so why cant the detainees work on a big govt. run property to subsidise themselves?

Yep it was. and they were bloody happy to be housed there after WW2. Not like the current mob who demand the world, are given it, and then still riot as it takes too long to process their applications (refer to post above re: destroying I.D)

And yes the barracks dorms were still there and were good enough for Army blokes living in them when training in the last few years. Good enough for our diggers, but not good enough for boat people apparently who need aircon, playstation, email, pool tables and lawns that make the WACA look like a disgrace.

I wouldnt expect the same treatment if I was a refugee in their country.

That's because you would be deported..

Our government is a pack of wankers and soft cocks

Asylum is the biggest con going.. Why cant people just apply by the normal means of immigration/visa applications? They have previously held passports and ID.. But choose to destroy it and chase asylum.. That is basically criminal activity (deception for personal gain) Sooner you seabreeze do-gooders realise it is the sooner we see no more BS topics on this subject.

Applying by "normal" means takes too long. Our Permanent Residence application took about 2 years in total. That is a heck of a long time to wait if your life and your kids lives etc are at risk on a daily basis.

So best you do now, is spend some of that contract money on that hammer finish trailer, and you could claim it was a legit work related cost, cos the locals chucked rocks at your trailer while on site

Nope, My family on both sides are about 8th and 9th Generation Australian...

I don't come from migrants... I come from Conquerors!

I was going to say Colonisers but that may get a different spin in this forum...

And the lengthy wait time for the refugees is due to those who have been deemed "Non-Refugees" creating a backlog in the courts because they are appealing the decision. If we had policy that moved them on once a decision was reached, then we would have less wait times for the genuine refugees.

2 ways to come here!
Legal:
Refugee following the rite channels, migrants filling mountain of costly paper work.

Illegal:
Queue jumping, pretend refugees, economic refugee and protesting that you are been treated unfairly

Like it or not but face it and we will get rid of the problem!

I recall during the school buildings debacle that it came out they'd been charged $700K for a two classroom building that was normally ....$450K. How the **** does a two classroom building cost $450K, normally?

When half the funds go to paying for Craig Thompsons escorts?

Do Union members get a discount if they hire Unionised Prostitutes?

Ha... Unionised prostitutes: would demand double the pay for half the work....

You'd get half way through and they would suddenly stop because it was their designated smoko time...

I will admit, the Unions did alot for us by lobbying for australian workers but it does seem to me that they now hold too much power and people in this country demand more than their fair share without putting in the work for it...
