Is the Rudd government about to erect a Great Firewall of Australia - introducing a form of internet censorship that will infringe upon the freedom of computer users to browse the worldwide web?

That is the concern of online civil liberties groups, as the Rudd government prepares plans for a field trial of internet service provider (ISP) filtering products, with a view to introducing them nationally.

ISP filtering is the blocking of certain sites which the government deems illegal or inappropriate, and is the central plank of the Rudd government's "Plan for Cyber-Safety".

Apparently it wont affect p2p which accounts forr 60% of Aus internet traffic.

all internet traffic would pass through the filter hence why it would be such a burden on internet speeds.
This really isn't gonna be able to stop people getting what they want BUT IT WILL STOP YOU from looking at things like www.hippocraticinthegovernment.com etc. as slowly but surly it will become a tool to silence free speech. if you like reading a street drag racing forum, it could become banned as it encourages illegal behaviour. you may be stupid enough to think that's a good thing, if so i'm off, can't deal with this forum any more

personally I think this just shows that politicians these days are more interested in easy votes instead of proper policy making. the $187 million this is going to cost would be much better spend getting broadband infrastructure put in place for our fellow Australians in the bush.

For everyone that is concerned about this new proposed policy visit: nocleanfeed.com/ . There you will find instructions on how you can make your voice heard by either calling or writing to Senator Conroy's office.
