A guy came past me on a very low fancy 3 wheel recumbent bike the other day. Much like this but smaller wheels. I did think it was pretty stupid that he has to wear a helmet.

He needs a ramp-cover so cars don't get stuck when they drive over him.

Rubber gloves! They're really comfy after you warm them up doing the dishes

More seriously, there is a long list of questions that you are expected to answer truthfully when you bleed. Your answers should end up either long term monogamous, or celibate, not like the Catholics

I cycle thousands of KM a year.
I wear a comfortable helmet always.

The fact that it 'can' save your life and doesn't interfere with riding a bike is good enough justification for me.

Also i have had more near misses on bike paths or duel share paths than on main roads.

I'm not a big hater, but geez I ****ing hate those things. Look at that smug prick with his "i'm so clever I've got a bike that's different to everyone else's" look on his face.

There's reasons normal bikes are upright - like because it's more comfortable, safer, you can see over stuff, you can apply your weight to the pedals, and you don't look like a cock.

I've been conducting a study (funded entirely by myself I might add), and the findings show beyond doubt that people who ride recumbent bikes are ****wits.

I usually wear a skid lid when on the deadly treadly.

My mates pay me out, "Why you wearing that **** etc"

"Why do you think" is a pretty good answer. Sure, it might not save your life but if I bin it big time (which with my riding ability is probably likely) I would rather have it on that not have it.

Your scone is delicate and for something so simple...

Perhaps this guy does not have full use of his legs. He is powering that bike with his arms. Would you deny this to those that are wheelchair bound

I always wear a helmet because I am a wuss. I don't mind this, as it probably means I will have a better chance of survival if I come off.

On the Great WA bike ride I did a few years back, one of my friends came off his bike, and hit the road. His helmet was absolutely shattered. He had a bruise on his forehead, and a bruise on his shoulder. Otherwise he was fine.

Best advertisement I have seen for wearing a helmet.

I was just going to point this out too. Nobody would choose to ride with their arms, and there are plenty of normal recumbents out there, so I expect he can't use his legs.

Good on him for getting out there and riding!!!

You see a few recumbents on the big social rides that I go on, and a lot of people ride them because of back problems, or some other physical problem. Again, good on em for getting out and exercising!

They are harder to see, so all of them carry large flags or similar so they can be seen.

Wife crashed her bike last year.

She smashed her helmet (broke it cleanly - a brand new helmet I'd bought her 2 days before).

5 hours in hospital, a bunch of x-rays and a couple of CT scans she walked out with a concussion and a really sore neck and shoulder.

Medical team said that if it wasn't for the helmet she'd have died instantly.

'nuff said.

I think the main IRONY here is:

(1) you claim all the cyclists injuries that cause death etc are internal organs.
Maybe because helmets became mandatory 15 or 20yrs ago?
Care to post stats of injury rates before and after the laws came in? I dunno what they are but I reckon you'd be surprised. Go on, do it.

(2) you also claim you were going to fail to stop for a cop flagging you down at an RBT and it could have killed you.
Well, he gave u a lawful requirement to stop.
Whether or not YOU think people ride p!ssed at 9am is up to u, but guess what, some do.

Now for IRONY fkn central - what are you wearing in your avatar pic.....?

If you are genuinely interested in casualty stats in regards to bicycles

http://helmetfreedom.org/
http://helmetfreedom.org/page/2/

If you take the time to peruse the above, You will see that if you take the loss of bussiness that bicycle retailers suffered after the legislations introduction into account, there is a very strong argument to suggest that the injury rate actually increased.

The reasons for this are complex. There's a lot more to it that thinking Oh, a little peice of styrene on the heads got to be good right?

For me its not about whether or not its a good idea to use one, Its about being forced to. If you can get prosecuted for riding through a park at running speed with no helmet then it is quite simply not a free country.
In fact, we are one of the only countries where this can happen.

I've seen people on here whinging about PFD laws for kite and sailboarders and supporting helmet laws. Well you can't have it both ways.

Yes.

OK, I've looked into this a bit further and would like to clarify my position.

Yes, in some respects I'd like to deny this bloke (lets call him Nigel) that opportunity simply because you can't get on one of those bikes without looking like a ****wit (as my research has shown).

But, on reflection, I guess if he can't use his legs perhaps I can live with his decision. I still kind of don't get it because he could just use a wheelchair and instantly look a bit cooler and have access to a whole heap of good sports, but I can live with it.

I have to admit that my softening of stance on this issue has a little bit to do with discovering this:

www.perthnow.com.au/news/wa/wa-paralympian-nigel-barley-wheels-way-to-success-ng-f6aae07acefaf1b2838af683aa63c8cf

I fully endorse Nigel's smug look and have taken him into account in my research. It's now the case that only 99% of people on recumbent bikes look like ****wits. Onya Nige.

I don't give blood, I don't vote...

I believe in freedom and self determination, if I don't wanna wear a helmet...

how the hell does that effect anyone else...?

I also don't give a crap about your how would your family feel sycophantic crap..

and don't crap on about taxes or hospital staff, if you talk taxes you don't knoe what you're talking about and nurses, god love em are paid to change bed pans and insert cathetas..

What a victim, you think you're being "out there" but you're really being an inward looking self indulgent tool that's wrapped up in your own existence. Go and clean bed pans in a nursing home and learn what self sacrifice is you self serving narcissist. Most people like you have realized that no one cares about you apart from yourself. ASK YOURSELF WHY

If you come off your bike your hands wont stop you before you hit the ground , well i guess it all depends how fast your going i always wear my helmet if im going fast but if im going slow there is really no need . People are easily convinced that a helmet is necessary on a bike yet people still get head injuries walking no one is telling you to wear a helmet when you walk also no one criticizes any one for driving an unsafe old car , id rather ride a bike with no helmet than drive a 1970s corolla id consider the bike safer.

As for cops yeah there mostly a waste of space and when they go 30kmh over the speed limit to catch you for going 10 over its ok.
I say just do what you feel like , its your head .
