Because of the thumbs we don't have to read trash replies such as
<snip>

You may not have to read them, but you do have to sort through them (in this case, multiple pages of it) to find the posts with content. User defined filtering would fix this.

If you enjoy reading quotes of quotes of quotes of quotes, with a "lol" appended at the bottom, then you could set your filter to inactive.

You can still adjust the size if you know the trick

Bizarre... I've copped a fair few thumbs down in this thread , but someone just went through the forum archive and thumbed down all my previous posts...

I wonder what button I pushed for someone to spend all that effort on me

*waits for a further flood of thumbs-down*

I've noticed that myself on the top jokes thread. It seem that the older the post is the more the negatives it accumulates. Even though it might start up high in the green it ends up close to neutral.
I tend to think it's something in the forum programming rather than someone bothering to go thru and flick all the thumbs as I've noticed it on other peoples posts as well.
Anyone else noticed this?

I like the thumbs up/down system because it gives people who are not smart enough to express an opinion in writing to at least have some sort of chance to communicate how they feel. Sort of like cavemen who although they can’t communicate in a formal language they can at least grunt loudly to show how they feel. Instead of thumbs up/down perhaps there could be ‘Me Like/Me No Like’ buttons instead.

How about.......
Having a system so that with the more posts you get, the more "powerful" (couldn't think of a better word) the persons thumbs up/thumbs down become.
For example a person with 5 posts might have 0.2 of a thumb up, but a person with 500 posts might have 0.5 of a thumb up.

How about a windsurfer that has magnets underneath and "somehow" defies gravity.

I just need help with the magnet bit.
