Not sure they are striking over safety concerns or how heavy a heavy thing is.

It seems both the employers and employees have accepted all terms and conditions of the new agreement, including 12% pay rise over 3 years (i.e. 4% per year for the next 3 years of the agreement, not 12% tomorrow).

They are striking because they want a 4 day on 6 day off roster, not a 4/4.

MUA is saying it isn't safety, it isn't fatigue, it is 'quality of life outside of work'

The strike is apparently costing the WA economy $350 Million

The port says 4/6 will increase their labour costs by 27%, for no productivity gain.

No matter what you say about how hard they work I can't see it to be right they they can strike and cost so much just because they want 4/6 not 4/4, whilst happy with everything else.

Now, the Fair Work Act says the workers can hold the Port to ransom over a life style choice outside of work, but the Port can take no action over a union that increases it costs by 27% for no productivity gain.

As felixdcat implied - it is hardly a bad quality of life they have at 4/4 and $90k a year with 4% rise every year and long term employment contracts protected by the Fair Work Act.

Striking for safety concerns that have not been addressed - OK, sriking for basic conditions being cut to levels below industry standard - OK, but striking because 4/4 doesn't give you an acceptable 'quality of life' outside of work just smacks of union militantism for the sake of militantism.

felixdcat, do you work on the wharf.. Exactly what knowledge would you have on working on the wharf that would let you make such a comment..Poor wharfies,.Did you know that the stevedore industry is the only industry in the world where the employers wont agree or sign off on general safety procedure standards, have you ever seen your mate squashed to death by rolls of steel that havent been secured properly by foreign workers, or worked under a rusty old ships cranes lifting 40 tonnes.. i have never heard of anyone having a 4 day roster for 90k on the wharf..
Working on the ships on a wharf is relatively dangerous, and people are paid as such, no more than builders that get height allowances for working over 6mts.
as for your statement,"no quality of life", are you aware of how the labour or roster systems work.. most stevedores dont get their work orders till 2.30pm for the following day, and as most are employed on a casual, GWE, or VSE basis then they may or may not actually get work..Do you think you could live not knowing exactly how much or even if your gonna get a pay check the next week..i know people that work in the industry that havent have work for weeks at a time... most company only guarantee 28hours a week unless your a suppo at which your not actually guaranteed any work.. so when you say quality of life, yes its hard to get any time for family stuff as most people are always on stand by for having to work..you may get a call 6pm for a shift that night which would require dropping whatever your doing to make money for the family.. I'd like to see you actually working on a ship lashing 40 ft containers with 3 high bars, all weighing in excess of 30kg each when theres 100 to hang, its bloody hard work
Unless you've worked on the wharf or no anything of the wharf i dont think you could fairly comment..

Right on brother.....the containers of animal hides made me want to retch, especially in 40c heat. I used to smear Vicks in my nostrils to dull the vomit inducing stench. The lashing bars are not that heavy, at least the singles aren't, however the double bars are more awkward than heavy. Like every manual labour job, it gets easier with time/experience. Driving the ITV or working the Pin Bin is where it is at Best student job I ever had.

Heavy lashing....

the MUA news story... rather than just commenting on one side of the argument, why not read both sides..

http://mua.org.au/news-story/3413/

That article made me LOL

I agree if safety issues are being neglected and peoples lives are at risk because of bad rostering and people being overworked and these issues are not being addressed by the bosses then yes strike and hold the country to ransome.

.....but before you go saying $90k is not enough for unskilled labour take a quick squiz at how much a junior Dr or junior nurse earns and the conditions that they work under. All of a sudden not listening at school seems appealing.

Yes I do not agree with PR very often but there I am ROFL too! I want to be able to go windsurfing when I want and fit work in just when it is not windy........ by the way give me 12% raise as well as new sails are expensive, to claim that you need to be skillled for sure!

I read the article ?

Extract ; “Instead of politicising and making a mockery of good faith bargaining, the Minister should allow Fremantle Port to continue negotiations and stop mispresenting the MUA's bargaining position in the media.”

Answer this, how is going on strike "good faith bargaining" ?

I read today they have dropped the 4/6 request, i wonder why, publicity=really bad and hiding to nothing spring to mind.
