Here's another one smarty pants !! Everyone is starring at the SPEEDO, NOT THE ROAD !!

People keep glancing at the speedo because they couldn't bear going a fraction of a kph slower than they could get away with. So it doesn't matter what the limit is they'll still closely monitor the speedo. If you aim to drive about 5kph slower than the limit you don't have to check the speedo very often. Or there's cruise control.

But a limit's a limit. In Victoria when they say 100 kph they mean it. The speedo watchers sit on 99.9kph. In NSW there's 10% tolerance, everybody knows about it, and the speedo watchers sit on 109.9kph.

The NSW RTA takes the 10% into account when they set the speed limit. Why they don't just do as the Vics do?

I agree (Ian K). I'm a cruiser, not a speeder... But I turn into a speedo watcher in 40 zones with cameras... (Revenue Zones!)

That's a fault of the cruise control in my car, it doesn't work below 40kph. I was once told by a racing car driver "cruise control is not just for the highway. Use it around town. " He said he used his all the time.

I used to drive the same route through a school zone on the way to work everyday to be there at 7am.

One day the wife called after a night shift to say some tool had smashed her pushie up and could I pick her up from work. I end up taking the same route to work as usual, only 30 min or so later. I was in autopilot and get done for 60 in a 40 zone. Any other day on my way to work and I'd have been fine at 60. Just not that day.

I'm not sure what the point of that was.

Your point was that while you were silly and should have been paying more attention so you didn't risk injuring/killing a kid, more visual reminders such as flashing lights when these zones are active would help ensure you and others keep our kids safe....

BTW I do it as well -flashing lights or some other warning should be mandatory for any zone that is time dependant, it is just too easy to forget, despite best intentions.

I get showered and ready to go, but the girlfriend wanted 5am nooky because we would both miss out for a few days... So I'm behind time, put the foot into it....

Why the need to speed if you were only 2 minutes late?

It would have been 31 minutes late for me. After I fell asleep for 30 minutes straight after.

I don't know. The more I think about it, the more I think that my point was if your missus has issues with transport, let her sort it out herself.

Lost of revenue! They do not want you to go slow.... just want your money! With today technology how easy and cheap would it be to stick to every speed sign a small electronic sender and have a receiver in the cars that would let you know of the speed limit in the area???? Again lost of revenue!
They could sell them for $ 20 over the value and use the profit to equip the signs!

Roadworks are my pet hate. If no one is working and there is no danger to roadworkers why do they leave the signs up???? Many are set up incorrectly and many also fail to put up the end roadwork sign. This technically means you have to drive at that speed until you pass a permanent proper sign. I loved on the freeway the other day when they had a 40km on one side of the road and an 80km sign on the other????

The best place for the flashing lights would be on the roof of the car. Compulsory and coded. A green light comes on when you are going 40, yellow @50, green @ 60 .... red @100.

This suggestion usually goes down like a lead balloon, infringes your freedom in a motor car etc, etc, but as it is you can sneak through a school zone a few km over and mostly no-one knows for sure that you have broken the law and placed kids in socially unacceptable extra danger. Peer group pressure would come into play, it's a stronger deterrent than a fine, you wouldn't dare speed thru a school zone with the wrong coloured light flashing.

Many intersection accidents are no doubt caused when the person, later deemed to be in the wrong, misjudges the speed of a speeding car, which, with no record of the speed, is later deemed to be in the right. A coded light system would reduce this.

Apparently there is a country in SE Asia where a system of this type is compulsory for trucks.

"Enjoy the ride" I think this is one of the best road safty campains that I have seen. It has made me think how I drive my car.

I am a mad driver at the best of times but since this campain has come out I put my music on and just cruise to the music and really enjoy taking time to get to my destination.

I find that when Im going to work or comming home on the freeway I generally sit in the middle lane with the cruise control on and sit on 100-103kph. When driving at that speed Im constantly amazed at how many people fly past me at 110kph +

And then the people that drive below the limit 70-80-90kph thats just as dangerous as going 120kph imo.

Funny thing is the police dont want to police these types of driving behavior, they would rather set up speed cameras and let some other bozo send out letters with pics on them to tell you that you are busted for 7kph over the limit!!

Get a man walking in front of the car holding a red flag and ringing a bell! Fence the road passing in school areas and all the driveways wile we are at it, ban cars around schools.......... no can't do that one.... the poor precious little ones will have to walk home and mum massive 4x4 taxi will be of no use!
Could teach responsible behaviour to parents and school kids as well! Mmmmmmmmmmmm too hard.

Here is a classic road works speed limit stuff up.

I hit up lancelin during the week a few times the summer just gone, and they were doing roadworks on the section of road after yanchep where it goes from 90 to 110 (road works started about 500m after you reach 110).

On the way back to Perth they covered up the 90km/hr sign at the end of the 110 zone. During the night they pulled in all of their roadworks and reduced speed signs and you could drive at 110 which is really good of them, but they failed to remove the cover from the 90 sign. This is an area where I have seen a number of speed cameras, so someone who didnt know the road could drive through this section at 110 and probably get pinged for it because the sign was covered up 5km up the road.

No it's not quite that extreme, but why can't we do that one? Apart from not liking the idea of everyone else knowing how fast you are going?

Car vs pedestrian culture is pretty bad in Oz. In shared zones cars just bulldoze through. At uncontrolled intersections cars are supposed to give way to pedestrians on the road into which they are turning!

The turning vehicle rule was drummed into me when I got my license years ago but the motoring culture has changed, I don't think many drivers or pedestrians are aware of it?

The rule is still there but you have to look hard to find it

page 66 of the Australian road rules

"

(3) If the driver is turning left (except if the driver is using a slip
lane), the driver must give way to:
(a) any vehicle approaching from the right, unless a stop
sign, stop line, give way sign or give way line applies to
the driver of the approaching vehicle; and
(b) any pedestrian at or near the intersection who is
crossing the road the driver is entering

"
There's a similar rule for turning right.

Mate even worse it is still there! The overtaking lane is done, new road surface, new white line. it is dead straight and better than all the road for miles either way. Nobody has been on site for a month or more.
And the fkn 80 sign is still up. [}:)]

If there is one thing that brings this forum together it is driving!

Who are they, ( I am going to answer this myself), those self righteous, wet under wear type, who deliberately do 12 ks below the speed limit AND THEN DEFY ALL ****ING LOGIC and speed up to the limit as soon as an opportunity to overtake takes place so that only one and a half cars can get past because the ****ing clown at the head of the cue will not floor it.

Do they not see the 12 frustrated law abiding citizens backed up behind?

Which answers the question. Take a walk around a shopping mall and see how people behave and then realise that most will gain a licence

They do not see you because they are not paying very much attention.

Talk of which, I got caught in traffic today coming in to Newcastle alongside a lady on a Vespa, all dressed fof the role. While it occurred to me that you could fit four of her into every car space it could also result in a lot of taking of eyes off road.

20-29 means you got done[}:)]
I dont like camera speed traps either, "however" saying that I haven't been done for a looooong time. I take bloody notice of speed sign changes. Not saying I dont miss the odd one or two,but I can tell you with 99% accuracy, even when I am passenger, what the current speed is on any section being driven on at the time.
40k school zones
One of our children was cleaned up, for the simple reason the children barged out not looking Fortunately the lady driving through who hit our child, was doing just under 40 kph, which saved our child's life
Doing more than 40 kph and would have been a different outcome

Its not rocket science, stick to the limit The camera system will go broke if everyone did, or at least be non profitable

Red light cameras also double up as speed cameras!

i got fined $75 for doing 8 km/h over 60 speed limit on Albany highway, just under the Leach hwy overpass.

overall this traffic cameras everywhere thing is good, as certainly reduces dangerous speeding drivers.
