Anyone read a good book lately and would recommend reading it? I know choice of reading material is pretty subjective, but for me finding a good book is like scoring 3-4 consecutive days of offshores and 4-6ft of swell.

"The Well at the Worlds End" and "The Unlikely Voyage of Jack De Crow" by A J MacKinnon. A real storyteller that you can relate to if you backpacked the world in the 70's and 80's.

David Hicks - Guantanamo My journey, was a real eye opener to the spineless Australian government we think protects us and the piece of poo media which is nothing more than a lapdog circus.

Ahn Do - The Happiest Refugee was a cool inspiring story about making the most of the opportunities life presents and how hard work and belief in yourself can take you where ever you want to go.

Stephen King - Under the Dome, typical Stephen King, awesome suspense filled narration and well drawn sub plots of a town and its people where something mysterious is happening, yet ultimately... nothing is happening

Roxana Shirayi - Last Living Slut, Real life story about some chick who sounds like she is trying to convince herself as much as the reader that her sexual promiscurity and obsession with sleeping with dudes from bands and being treated like poo was an empowerment to her female sexuality... but she just comes off sounding like a total slut

Totaly agree Doggie. Heard he's writing a second book.
Read it before we went to Mumbai last Jan. Went to a few of the places out of the book. Had a few beers and a chicken burger at Leopolds Cafe.

There was going to be a movie as well with Johhny Depp but I dont think it happened.

I would love to go to Leopolds just to see if its like the description in the book.

Betrayed by Stan Telchin, an account of a Jewish family who converted to Christianity. Very interesting insight into the jewish mind and their attitude toward non jewish people.

Shantaram, best ever

I read Shantaram ... in India. It's supposed to be true. I suspect it is fiction but with elements of truth. He certainly got the feel and the vernacular of India right. All that sisterf..ker and brotherf..cker and badmash and goondah stuff is spot on.

It's really annoying. The man is such a total dick from start to finish. All this hard man, almost super man stuff. Unarmed combat. Surviving impossible sh.t. But he gets his feelings hurt and goes to pieces at the drop of a hat.

He does stretch the truth in Shantaram. Thats for sure.
Leopolds is everything like the book Doggie, except for they now have an armed guard at both doors after the place was shot down in 08 atacks.

I can recommend a good author; if you like sci-fi, Peter F Hamilton writes some cracking good books.
His books are really immersive, a bit of a hefty read but the worlds & technologies are fleshed out really well.

If you like your SF by the kilo then Peter Hamilton is your man. Easy to read. Not too dumb. Plenty of techie stuff and a bit of rooting for good measure.

He's one of the few writers who takes a few simple premises and expands them to a fully consistent logical world view. It's proper SF.

The only reservation is he has a few quasi-religious threads running through his books. [}:)]

shantaram is nowhere near a true story. he has bits of his own life in and made a work of fiction. there are some good parts but it turns to ****e in the end in my opinion and looking back I dont think it was that great.

memorable books for me

the road - cormac mcarthy
catch 22
a farewell to arms
ship of gold in the deep blue sea (best book ever)

but books are like movies - depends on your taste if you like em

Yep, I've found Neil Gaiman too, a fantastically versatile writer. I would also add 'The Sandman' series. They are comics rather than books, but they are for the adult reader.

Funny you should mention that, I'm reading it at the moment. Not much chop, IMO. Not crap enough to give up on though, I'll see it through to the end.
