2nd hand kites are not the ideal choice i know but to those like myself where money is a problem they are a good option.
It's amazing what people expect for their old kites
2006,2007 and 2008 kites, i'd expect to pay $500 or more so long as they are in good condition.
Kites under 2005 would be lucky to sell for $350 or less, it doesn't matter how good a condition they are in.
To those of you with kites up for sale you should price them right to sell them otherwise they will be dust sheets in the back of your car by this time next year.

for example: "2003 kite excellent condition, flown 10 times, $400". lol no way mate!!

the 2nd hand kite market is a buyer's paradise - we're all consumer whores for upgrading every year because a new kite is 5% better

mmm
I would only call gear less than a year or at a year old in good condition, around $1000.00 , any older and stuff would have started to perish and you could be up for some repairing. = not really good condition

two years old and not used.... ~ 800 1000ish 3 years old wouldn't bother if your intermediate +

There are better buys at the local kiteshops if you look around.
There are some absolute bargains around, especially if that particular kite shop doesnt stock that particular brand.
Some of the ads I saw on seabreeze recently made me laugh, guys that wanted $1200-$1500 for a second hand kite

Is $1450 a reasonable asking price for an 08 11m Bandit ? Not had much of a response from the ad in buy and sell. Mind you it is only the freeby ad...

Heres a pretty accurate guide i thought up:

2008 kites: pay no more than $150 per m^2
2007 Kites: pay no more than $100 per m^2
2006 kites: pay no more than $75 to $80 per m^2
2005 kites: pay no more than $50 per m^2
2004 and before kites: swap for old porn collection or soiled mattress'
**Factor in differences for condition of kite and usage**

Im not too sure about boards but no matter the size, this guide always brings up the most people will be willing to sell a 2nd hand kite.

Guess so gruezi,I'm trying to prelong the life of my Reb 07 by keeping clean and dry, hosed off at home after a sesh, rolled up and packed in its carry bag.....even in good nick the 2nd hand market commands a very high depreciation factor with kiteing equip....the eqasion in my view is 1/3x retail purchase price after 2 yrs depreciating, from there, considering condition of kite...if I applied that to my 07 Rebel 10m that I payed $1800 for, I should get $600 for it at the end of this year....unlikely, does brand enter the equasion, i.e popularity and quality of manufacture?....so many variables....a table for used gear would be great as in cars hay....cheers

hey rooey, don't wash your kite in fresh water. especially if you then roll it up and put it in a bag.
mould won't grow on a damp kite if its salt water, but it will thrive on your damp sailcloth and stitching if its been washed in fresh water

No worries Stamp, always dry it out before puting away,I'm not perfect sometimes I leave it in a heap for day's but alway's try to put the bar n lines in the tub to wash out saltwater, cause it is very abrasive in the lines when dry.....kite string, how expensive is that !.....Roo

A few wispers I have heard that the Bandit is on its Third release (in a year), problems with the bridal attachment points is the word.

To be honest I was going to buy one this year but with all of the reliability and build quality problems people I know experienced with the Tribal 2 (splitting struts / exploding canopy / control bar splitting in half!) coupled with the poor after sales service. Well I gave it a miss.

A shame as I am sure the bandit is a fantastic kite and I was a big F.one fan. I just dont like repair bills.

Brand makes a huge difference when selling. When buying a kite I always go for something that has a good track record and is not the first year of release. Just look at what's selling secondhand before buying new.

In my experience, you can expect to lose $1000 on a kite after a full year of use. The depreciation seems to slow a little after that and then once a kite is over 2 years old don't expect too much. So if you go out twice a week then that is $10 per use of your kite - not too bad if you ask me.

Very long time Roo - how's the kiting going?

On the subject of 2nd hand kites, does anyone have the most cost effective formula and how much it costs them per year? I've just sold 2 Cabrinha Switchblade 2's (10m and 14m) - lost about $1000 on each after 1 year of use. Main reason for selling is that I'm going for a new 11m as my main kite and will buy a smaller 2nd hand one for nukin winds in the new season.

Is it better to hold onto kites for 2 years? I think if you can stagger so that you're only getting a new one each year would be better for cash flow. About $1000 per year is my budget and I'm way over that with my current strategy.

Good thanks Nick.........got myself a new M8 tt from Adv/Spts and would REALY like a new F0ne Bandit but finances are a little grim.......my Rodeo spat the fuel pump on Saturday so it is being repaired today.......$680 + labour....and we think kites are expensive.......the pump is in the f/tank and are a weakpoint on Rodeo's,anyway's if ya look at most sport toy's, kites are not that expensive, just a pity they have a short life span....say giday to Mike, hope his leg is healing well, must all catch up... Mark W. P.S Junglist thanks for the drum about the Bandits...will keep my eyes open regarding what you say about week points of the Bandits.....they are an awsome kite,if they iron out the bugs they will be bullet proof !

If by fair condition you mean one notch lower than good condition then I would say about $800 at the most maybe even $780 for early 2007. Good to excellent Condition maybe $900. Have a look at what shops are selling 2nd hand kites for and then price yours a bit lower or same.

Remember it also depends on the condition of the lines and how stretched or baggy the canopy is. Try and test fly if possible.

Fair price is only in the eye of the buyer....put out an offer, get a bid...that is how the market works I think.

Pre 06 Cabs used to begin falling apart after about 90-130 sessions. The new material used in 07 gear is tops...still can break the 12m Switchy. However, the trim strap broke last week in 25 knots, same as last year's at about this time. Recon the new Cab. material should be good for about 300 sessions. 2K/300 = $6.6666666666666 per session, much cheaper than golf, smoking, drinking, or sex.

It would be good if kites had mileage meters like on cars... so when people sell their kites they could go on number of uses like used 100 times. The only problem is that nobody would ever be honest about this. When I get my new kite (I've said this before but never done it) I'm going to record how many times I use it - I'm planning to keep it for its whole life this time instead of trading after 1 season. I would be impressed if I could get 300 sessions. That would mean 3 years at an average of 2 sessions per week.

Looking at trade in prices, it seems that the first 100 sessions cost you about $1000 to $1200, that is if you can get 100 sessions in that year. If you can get another 150 sessions out of the kite then those would cost you another $1000.

Maybe 1.5 seasons is the optimum length of time to have a kite?
