hey guys.. so im going to Hawaii on friday the 18th for 10 days
i just have a couple of questions for the people who have some knowledge of the beautiful paradise.
okay so im staying on the island with wikiki on it, so are there any good kite surfing hot spots on that island?
what should i do about kites? should i rent or bring me own? i have a 12 meter, 14 and a 9 but i wont be able to use 9 when its windy due to my friend taking it.
anything i need to know about regarding the locals?
any locations kiting is banned or prohibited over their?
thank you for your comments =D

I guess I am the one to answer this .. I spent 2 months there from this time last year...
waikiki is like the gold coast... on the island of oahu....
the windward side is the north east - look out for kailua bay... kiting paradise.. but not super consistent.. I did score good 9 and 12 m days though... so you should be fine.

its worth taking a trip to maui (north shore) but you will need 9m and smaller... many days a 9m is too big with ppl riding 4-7m....kites!

and... look out for the locals...(the kiters are cool) but watch out for the rest.. they can be pretty mean - in maui especially.

Good kiting on both Oahu and Maui. Maui is very windy most of the time, and Oahu is generally at least a kite size or two lighter on the same day. Both islands, go to one of the bigger kite shops and chat to the staff about where to go, and more importantly were not to go! There beach enforcement is a little more hard core than anywhere in AUS. Respect is a big thing, especially on Maui.

Have fun!

Undagekiter, please report back on anything you learn. I am heading there late August and am probably looking to buy gear there, might take my board but will see...

Any tips on shops, locations and good bars will be great!

Get over to Maui. The wind is consistently 50% stronger than Oahu.

If you do insist on Oahu, go to that beach at the North West tip of Oahu (where they filmed Lost) the reef is very shallow and very sharp, so be careful and wear booties. You should get 15 knots there. The wind at the mid north coast is piss weak (usually about 10-12 knots in April).

If you go to Maui I have a contact for budget accom at Paia, which is where you want to stay. His name is Steve and his number is 808-579-8728. The guy is a bit weird and creepy, but he manages about four properties right in the heart of Paia, word of mouth only (he's doing business against regulation), cash only, and about one third what you'd pay for something at the local condos. He even has a car or two to rent cheap If not, the next cheapest car rental is Word of Mouth Rentals.

The whole North Shore of Maui rocks. Start out at Kite Beach (Kanaha) behind the airport. After you get to know the wind you can do downwinds from Hookipa to Kanaha (about ten kms.) Just get permission from the Hookipa life gaurds before you launch. There are awesome reefs along the way that are only accessable on a downwind. They pick up three times the swell than the Boneyard reef at Kite Beach does. You'll want a small kite for 20-30 knots. April winds are a bit lighter so you may get 15 to 20 knot days. And be patient about waiting until after noon. You can burn yourself out before the best wind hits about 3pm.
