Has anyone been taken out mid air before?
The dumbest, most dangerous but funny for onlookers thing I've done to date, whilst kiting. Happened the other day as a followed a guy in who was upwind heading in the same direction.

I was movin a bit quicker than him so I thought, time to get outa this its probably a bit tight....I decided just to launch down wind and put some distance between us, he musta started to turn as I took my eyes off him, I launched and mid air his kite slamed into me knocking my board off my feet...maybe scarin the ** outa me as well...I actually landed on the outside of his kite and rode it down half way to the water before my kite powered up and yanked me off again.

He apologised profusely afterwards but I said it was just as much my fault for travelling too close.....good lesson in always looking and keeping your distance!

Still it was fun to ride a kite on the other end for a change.

I have jumped on an opposite tack to someone when I saw them go for a jump trying to see if I could get higher, we both got hit by a gust and he over rotated and sent his kite down hard and we colided mid air.

And I kitelooped into someone who was directly behind me whilst I was halfway through, up in the air.

Haha, no one got hurt or kites tangled. Somehow both occasions the kites didnt even crash.

I once passed a guy at the exact same altitude mid air. Didn't even know where he came from, just out of nowhere was this guy floating by me in the opposite direction

I had a guy crash his kite fully powered, straight down, right behind me just as I landed a jump. Didn't even know he was there. It landed so close that the noise just about deafened me I was glad I was wearing dark boardies that day......

Yeah Melville...big traffic day, I spent most of the session trying to dodge the newbie kiters wobling all over the place....Only problem with the new breed of bow kites is they can stay upwind in the main area no matter how bad they are.

I've also invested in dark boardies for camoflage of future suprises...I've gone with black cause I couldnt find patchy brown ones.

Doing a downwinder the other day and the first I knew of a guy coming in behind me was the zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzhhhhh (nice sound effects huh??) sound his lines made sliding down mine toward me; had to duck and let them and the kite shoot by where my head might have been.

Met him on the beach an hour later and he apologised as he had lost control upwind of me; we had a laugh about it but it was pretty scary at the time

i launched a jump one day and there was a bloke who was travelling downwind through the kiting area right behind me as i hit it - i looked before going but he was ages away. I thought i'd make it easy but he must have accelerated to catch me or something.

anyway turned the kite back, was about 4-5 metres up (good wind) and his kite hit mine just before the apex of the jump. All the lift went out of the kite instantly and i fell like a sack of beans all the way down. got smashed and was wondering what the hell had happened (i never saw his kite at all) and he came over and had a look then kept on going - no apology or anything. i guess it was half his fault, half mine though. relaunched and kept riding - with a few bruises. later i realised that it was amazing my kite hadn't tangled in his lines, or rolled through the lines as it went down. very lucky.

Dare I suggest that it is spelt 'aerial'? Since I can't even play this game, never having had any such close calls, I should probably just keep out of it.

This wasn’t so much as an “Aerial”, but couple of brothers that kite down at the local spot are playing about banging their old c kites together on the beach (look out safety police) and one of the kites flew between the other kites lines, so here’s the two dudes, one trying to climb in between the middle lines of the other dude bar while he is crouching to sort it out... I always laugh when I hear that... pretty funny if you got a good sense of visuals... most of us tend to stay upwind of them!

Not sure i agree about half his fault. Its pretty much all your fault if you get hit mid air unless you get hit by another person who is also jumping. The responsibility is always on the person jumping to check its safe to jump before jumping. If you didn't check or didn't check properly and hit someone else, thats your fault, you can't blame it on them because they were travelling faster than you expected.

I find letting people know where you are going to go the easiest option when getting to close.

Make eye contact
Point to your self
then point where you are going to go.

Very simple and easily understood and no confusion for the other punter who contrary to popular belief is not psychic.

Don't forget to wave afterwards

Nice one Elmo, that makes good sense. It is sometimes difficult to work out who is going to give up ground when you are coming at each other from opposite directions on exactly the same line.

I belive there is a PortStarboard rule in this case trying to remember that when you are flying at each other is a bit difficult... especially when people get confused about which tack they are on.

And I like the wave idea afterwards :)

There are already standard signals to turn, land, are you OK?, let go of the kite, land to me, etc....
Dont start making up your own hand flaps it will just confuse everyone.

Sorry Dave, I'm just a Poley. I only know catch and launch from when I've helped out and the "way cool" for a Fur ken big jump.

All the rest is just flapping arms to me.

But whenever there's been some confusion as to who goes where and I've pointed out to where I'm going to someone, theres never been a misunderstanding and I've always gotten a wave back after.

As I'm Psychotic not psychic It works for me, It's simple, it saves confusion.

Saw that someone tapped the top of their head the other day to land a kite.
I have had a lesson when I started but was not taught any signals. On a really busy river mouth I haven't seen a signal yet?? I think there must be lots of Psychics out there. Has the list of signals been posted before out of interest?

Would love to read through them and then watch if anyone actually uses them. Only one I know is the thumbs up to let go of the kite when someone is launching for you (and I am open to finding out that event that is wrong)? Maybe this should be a new topic, it has probably been written before
