What the... GreenFat

I was 118kg when I started kiting, then got down to 104. On the way back up now that it's not so physical.

G'day,

hey Lofty I thought I was the heaviest here but you beat me, I'm 195 cm and 120 kg. I ride the angry balls North Rhino '08 16m with no worries. I've been know to pull the odd 10 - 12m jumps with my wifes 10m 08 Rebel or my 12m 07 Rhino. Big boys can fly, you just have to get the right equipment. I **** at tricks so going old school is my thing.

I found if the kite is not a stable design like the Rhino, under a big load (we big boys can develope) the kite ****s its self, and kind of collapses, resulting in surges in the power, or worse, a piss weak jump.

Anyway, most companies have got there **** togeather so good luck.

cheers,

Robert

Interesting, is kiting old enough to have an 'old school' yet?
Nothing disrespectful meant. Just asking.

hey all lets not forget kiting is a demanding sport requiring at least enough fitness to permit a few hundred meters of ocean swimming if the **** hits the fan when you are off shore.... you want to have at least a reasonable level of fitness.

Hey dism,

Kiting has been through several changes in style of tricks.
1999-2000 - Jumping and staying upwind. Unhooked jumping with dangly spins. Boards were all surfboard in shape usually with 5 fins.

2001-2002 - Jumping big with Rolls and transitions, multiple spins and rolls, table top jump jumps and rewinds. Candle sticks, deadman!
Boards were all wake board shaped twin tips. Also LF pickle fork ruled supreme.

2001-2003 - Wake style started, kite low tricks- Raleys, S-bends, rolls, Slim chance and KGB Boards were mostly wakeboards with boots/bindings.

2002-2004 - Massive jumps, kiteloops, board offs, foot outs. Boards were all twin tips and the waves on Mutants. Twin tips were longer and narrower.

2003-Present - Wakestyle continues but boards have all become kite twin tips with and without bindings. Wake kids have gone retro back to bindings of late.

2005-Present - Surf style. Wave riding on surfboards and wave twin tips. Boards are purpose built Kite surfboards.

2005 - Present - Power moves like L3, mobes, many moves with kiteloops and downloops. Mobes and multiple handle passes. Boards are mostly twin tips with a few bindings amongst for fun. This is finally a true kiteboarding style utilising the power of the kite to do stuff no other sport can do, we have finally found individuality by blending the best of other great sports to create something spectacular and individually kitboarding.

As you can see, kiteboarding has changed and evolved rapidly much faster than wind surfing ever did probably due to the borrowing from other sports and the rapid advances in technology and materials.

When people refer to "old school", they generally refer to 2001-2002 riding style which was the first real kiteboarding expression, It is something no other sport can do. Many feel it is purely kiting and it is certainly still fun. It still attracts the most oohs and aahhs from the crowd of general public onlookers although the newer kitelooping/wake style also brings some oohs and ahhs also as long as the tricks are big and powerful the crowd loves it.

Leads me to wonder where kiteboarding will be in 8 more years......? Very exciting!

Good winds,

Hi Marni

Just like personal training, find a Qualified intructor who Actually knows what there doing (paper means nothing) If you feel comfortable with them - enlist their services. Its impoartant for everyone to have a good experience 1st time as it would be a shame to lose someone with the (listen up fellas) uncritical enthusiam we all had in the beginning...
If theres a kiteing spot thats shallow (chest height) this may help with your confidence knowing you can touch the bottom If things go a tad wrong.
Untill youve got it down - Beware if you panic in deep water... the instructor will have some difficulty untill you gather yourself.
As with others overtime, the swimming and muscular endurance will get better, possibly your weight may drop some & accordingly your kite size will reduce too.

A good instructor, be it beginner or advanced trick - will put your best interests 1st (rather than theirs) and take care of you with sound & solid advice.

Hope everything goes well

Cheers P.s dont drink the water

pintofpale, Sure you have an extra 2kg of blood in your knob but that blood has come from your brain.

LOL,
a female friend once complained to me that all the men she met had a dick and a brain, but only enough blood to operate one at a time :)

(No, I'm not interested in your opinion, I'm just looking for a fight so that I can find an excuse to not go out.)

I find a high aspect ratio 20m C kite to be good to 20knots... probably 25knots, now that I'm pegging down a few extra cheeseburgers.

Mind you, I lose about a kilo just pumping the fncker up!
