Realplayer,

The answer to your question is YES, kites are cheaper in Singapore. But do you research. Check the exchange rate, price and allow for duty. You can bring $900 worth of goods back in to the country without paying duty. More depending on the strictness of the customs officer.

If you going to mail order from Singapore you won't save anything or much anyway, better off buying it here.

Like everyone has noted one of the things to consider is back up support when you get back home.

The main selling (sailing) season even in Gero is very short over the course of a year.
Shops do need to make hay when the sun shines.
But lose the fucn attitude dude.
Customers are lost for many reasons,
so why invent new ones ?

theoretical.
if a fellow kiter/windsurfer wishes to sell his kit in your shop at 10-20% comission E.G. ten to twenty dollars per hungee.(not many cartons of stubbies )
you might be a little peeved if that person then extolled the virtues of buying windsports products overseas to all and sundrie!

marc,
Sorry we could'nt sort you out with a kite while you were in Geraldton.I realize that you have the perogative to shop where you like and that price and choice is important but please try and see it from a regional shop owners perspective. The Geraldton market is limited and we do our best to provide a range of products with good service in an industry with notoriously small margins and fierce competition. At G-Spot we pride ourselves in supporting the sport at a grassroots level by providing safe qualified instruction, organising and sponsoring local events and offering a professional repair and consignment service. If these services are to continue being available most people realise that local shops have to be supported at a retail level as well.
I hope all is well and look forward to doing business with you when you return.
Regards,
Tim

Is there a big import duty on kites that they are more expensive here than elsewhere in the world?

Comparitive pricing on Aus vs South Africa (which also has duties, vat etc) is $2200 vs $1700 for a brand and size of kite I won't mention (unfair to pick on one brand).
