I've noticed some really good deals on kites from a US store KiteHIGH Kitesurfing. The website says international fed ex postage is free with no sales tax. Has anyone bought from the US? Is it a good idea?

Dunno...but i know that site and have been tempted to buy stuff from them also - if u can time it right, u can speak to one of their sales reps online and they can usually offer u an even better deal.

This site also has gear at good prices - but still i haven't bought anything from them either.

Hi Cooky,

Its true you wont pay US sales tax but you will pay 5% Duty on the kite and 10%GST on the kite, duty and postage when it gets to AUS.
If you buy your kite from overseas the Aus distributer wont be able to help you with any support or warranty issues as they keep a record of the kite numbers.
The prices didn't look so hot to me, a lot of old kites too.
eg- 13m 2005 SS Fuel.
Thier price- $1470.69
+ 5%= $1544.22 + 10%= $1698.65AUD
Current price for 13m Fuel in Aus is $1450
Id suggest speaking to your local shop and asking what specials they have or what price they are selling the kite you are after. If they have a website they may not have thier prices up to date.

Youll find you only get charged duty and GST if the amount is over $300 or something. Thats probably why you didnt get charged. Im with Jason, there are many retailers in OZ that can offer as good a deals than overseas and will service you in the future. Shop around, its only an email away and support the people making the sport happen in OZ

alright, if any shops in Aus can offer me a Liquid Force Spectrum II (NEW) 8mt kite only for $600 I'll take it. Even if it's up to $650 to save me the import. Email me if this is possible, otherwise I will try to import from the American company.
Anyone else imported and paid or not paid tax?

I bought both my LF and BEST from them so they must sell LF.

I found the SPEC 2 to be a very unsatable kite in the air. I had a 14 and an 8mtr and the 14 was the worst. Turning speed was average and found the bottom end grunt didnt exist. however in strong winds the kite boosted big, but had trouble depowering in the gusts. Im not the flashest of riders but as soon as I tried the NEMESIS I found my ability improve in a single session. Hey this is my reflection but would consider BEST as they are great products and backed by unreal service.

LF boards are great but the kites are yet to be proven to me.

You shouldn't get charged duty. I rang customs and told them I wanted to get a kitesurfing kite into the country, what was I up for. Apparently a kite with an inflatable leading edge used to propell a rider across the water and into the air is classified as a non powered aircraft and thus free of duty. I'll see if I can find a reference for you. In the mean time all you importers now getting a refund on duty...I'm runnung a little low on Crownies!

You wont miss GST tho, especially if they invoice the kite to you and supply paperwork, which is the norm.

I have just tried buying off kitehigh.com. the kite was shown as $925. I bought it and then came an email saying it totalled $698.90. I was like Sweet, then i replied back to choose the colour. The replied back that the colour was out of stock and because it was a special they had to charge me $150 postage. I said ok because it was still cheaper than what i was going to buy it for. Next the bank fraud section calls me and asks if i purchased something worth $1111. $260 extra than what they lead me to believe. I told the bank to hold the money and i am waiting for a reply from kitehigh. They did the dirty on purpose. WARNING - STAY AWAY......[}:)]

NO **** NEWB's

Are you the international novice?!?! Kitehigh was quoting you US dollar prices.

It just happens to be that (USD$698.90+USD$150 = USD$848.90) is just about the same as AUD$1111 using any exchange rate over the last 12 months...you bank and card speak AUD. Kitehigh speaks USD.....get it!

I've also done some research on these kites from overseas.
For example
A best Waroo 12m and 55cm bar = $968.99 US and shipping of around $86US where in Aus we currently have 0.75 cents to the US dollar

= a minimum cost of 1406.6 dollars counting on the fact you won't be hit with any TAX's, which in my experience occurs very rarely.

Thus in my opinion it seems pretty damn expensive getting kites from overseas seeing that you can pay less to walk in to your local shop and get personal service and help, but most importantly an EASY way to claim warranty and support in the future.

Hope that helps some
Cheers
Alex

i've bought a $1000 wakeboard from the US and they didn't charge me any gst/duty or anything, apparently you can just get them to write it down as a gift. But if warranty is important i'd prob save the hassle and pay the extra couple of hundred or so, hit up your local store for a good price, most guys will match prices or at least offer something close.

dont forget to add shipping ?, with DHL it will cost approx $100oz

DHL is the best as tey will deliver it to your door and send you the GST charges later if there are any due...

If your purchase is over $1000, then it will flag on their screens and they will apply the charges (10% gst & 5% duty)

5% duty on the purchase and then add 10% gst on top of the purchase price + duty + shipping...

If your purchase is below $1000oz it should not flag and will get through

gday cooky, if the LF sp 2 is the style of kite you want i would go the Best Yarga '06', i have flown the LF's a few times in diferent conditions and liked them but now have purchsed the '06' Yarga's and they are heaps better, they are rock solid, very stable, awesome turning speed and depower better than any other kite i have flown. you can get a 9m only for about $638 @ 0.75c US.

if your around Perth somewhere i would be happy to give you a go and see for yourself.

cheers

Hi,
Any item over AUD800 will incure GTS and duty approx. 15% in total. Plus you will need to pay freight.

I bought a kite from kitehigh last year (14M CO2)... once the dust had settled I probably saved AUD100!

I didn't even mention all the emails and phone calls to get my order sorted out because they forgot to ship everything I ordered.

Conclusion...I don't think there is all that much saving in buying some items from overseas.

How many times have you purchased gear over seas gigantas... my reason for asking this is I place orders overseas on a daily basis, admittedly I work for the company and know exactly how much taxes will be incured and when... I do see your point in regards if your doing it your self as I've not heard a good responce from anyone regarding "kitehigh"... However like I said I do this on a daily basis and never ever have I been charge something I didnt know was comming...

Kiterpilot,
This has been the only "expensive" item I have purchased from overseas.

Maybe I was a little liberal by saying "Any item", however kites will incur the fees I mentioned.

I didn't mean to give the impression that I wasn't expecting to pay the duties and GST or the frieght.

I guess the point I was trying to make is, that all these things need to be considered when purchasing from overseas... It's easy to get excited by a flashing banner that shows a price that appears to be cheap... however the landed price is quite different.

I am not sure about the tax threshold but clothing sure does not fall into the category. I bought 4 shirts for a total of $200AUD which I though would save me about $120AUD, but I ended up paying tax/duty of $145, which ultimately costs me more
