Hi

I am thinking of buying a second-hand kite on seabreeze however it is listed interstate so I can't look at it prior to purchasing it. Have other people bought from interstate, or site unseen.

Have people used the Aus Post cash on delivery method mentioned on seabreeze?

Have you transferred funds to a seller and trusted them to send it later?

How does it work in practice?

I am thinking of moving away from my preferred brand and buying one in SA so I can go and see it, pump it up, and possibly even demo it. Although I doubt I would demo it if it looked all good pumped up on someone's lawn that would probably be good enough for me.

I've done this in the past. Have twice purchased a kite without seeing it from the buy and sell section on this site. Have also sold a kite to someone in QLD before. And havent had any dramas.

Best thing to do is get them to send you a photo or scan of their drivers license before any money changes hands. Also get them to take close up photos of gear... (Pig tails, lines, bridles, repair jobs, etc etc.)

You've really just gotta be careful. Most of the time you can gauge how genuine someone is by speaking to them on the phone. If you cant get them on the phone to deal with them in person.... be wary!

Good Luck.

Hey bro, I got thwarted big time buying a kite from W.A. Paid the cash, kite advertised in good condition but was a piece of crupkus. Been torn in half(and repaired), bladder didnt hold air, knots in the flying lines, bar was worn thru etc etc...
The thing was the dude was all bewildered and genuinly thought the kite was a bargain when i rang him...
My advice is get lots of photos and details about repairs, flying time and stuff...
I ended up getting a refund but was out of pocket for the return postage and it took ages to get my money back in dribs and drabs...
For me a bad exp that i wont be doing again...
Probably gonna get red thumbed for this bit but if your tryin to save coin, then theres certain companys that dropship brand new kites under warranty for half the price you pay in stores... No names here but im sure you can find what im talkin about... Why buy a 2nd hand kite when u can get a new one for the same price right? Yeah yeah, Im killing the resale market i know, boooo...
These are the times we live in....

I've bought and sold sight unseen before no dramas.

But I'm honest so the whoever bought from me got a full description of any problems, possible problems, points of interest about the kite, anything and everything, warts and all. And they got a fair price, I'm never trying to wheel and deal, just get something reasonable back.

It's always been the same for the the other way, I've got what I paid for, no probs.

Oz post COD has been the easiest, then it's guaranteed delivered and the seller will be paid.

Haven't bought but have sold interstate using Aus Post COD. This works well as you don't pay until you pick up the gear from the nearest post office so you vertually have it in your hands and you have to pay before they will pass over the goods so both buyer and seller ar protected from that aspect.

I would only buy a brand I know sight unseen so you know what questions to ask, and photos lots of photos.

I have had non-kiting relatives of interstate buyers look over the goods as well. At least they could get some idea on condition and look the seller in the eye... Good Luck...

I bought a kite from seabreeze from a girl once. It was a very nice experience.
Kite was also in great condition.

I also bought a kite from a guy (what's worse, a shop also), and there were a bit more repairs than what i was told over the phone and email.

Therefore, always buy from a girl.

Depends on the seller and the expectations of the buyer.

I would not dick around with cash on delivery or pay half or any of that crap. I tell the truth. You buy used. The risk is yours. That's why the goods are cheap. If you want no risk then go to a shop.

It is important for the seller to give a full and frank disclosure of the faults and wear and tear of the goods. Even provide pictures of damage or repairs if necessary.

I have sold kites on Seabreeze and ebay and the buyers have been very happy.

Two kites were almost new and the buyers got mega bargains.

One kite was well-used but the buyer was still happy. I was honest about the use of the kite and did not exaggerate the condition at all. The pump carked it the day he got it. I offered to pay for a new one (a cheapy from an outdoors shop). He went to a major kiteshop and they said "Known warranty problem. Free pump." so we were both happy.

I bought a kite from WA a few years back, the seller is on seabreeze still, but I won't name and shame. It was a Best Waroo for the wifes birthday, sold as perfect condition and hardly used. When I received the kite the valves had nearly had it and the whole kite was covered in small holes, obviously dragged across oyster shells or similar, so be very careful......

Always a risk, you get what you pay for. Bought interstate always did well.

To the guy that bought a kite from a guy still on seabreeze and didn't do you right I reckon let us know!! Be factual and accurate - although give an email to the dude and let him set you right.

If not, let it rip man, this is what the net is for, user self regulated information, if they are shyte let the community know.

Again be factual, not emotional and let the guy redeem himself first, otherwise farq him. Reputation on the net is a gift and will also be deadly if ya do the wrong thing. if you are that person and you have inkling of what this buyer is talking about, get emailing mate.

me... I now have found and trust a local retailer in scabs and will always support these guys from now on

^ I sort of agree with that.

If you are buying a used 8 or 9 from WA you know it has probably been the kite of choice for the season or two, However a 12 from that state might not have had as much use as a 12 from the eastern states.

Just do you research and be smart. I have bought kites from interstate before that have been in perfect condition (as described). Even if you buy a new kite from a shop there is still a level or risk involved every time you use it.

Generally I like a second hand kite because I feel like I don't have to care for it as much. Not the same feeling as when you have a crisp 2K product in the air for the first few sessions.

"seabreeze friends came to my rescue! back on the water in 3 days ! Thanks"

"Always happy with Seabreeze ad results. Sold several kites and boards now, cheers."

"Too Easy! a great place to trade craft with like minded crew.

"Sweet, easy and always gets results"

"Still the best place to advertise water sports gear !"

Best advice is ask lots of questions and ask for proof, a few quick photos takes the seller 5 mins to do and gives you a lot of assurance.

I've sold interstate and I reckon the buyer got a great deal, mainly because your local market is always smaller than the whole of Aus!

I have purchased a few kites and boards etc.... here on seabreeze and have never had a problem... my little rule of thumb is to buy off someone who is a reasonably regular forum contributor....ie not someone with just 3 posts ....if they are a regular contributor they probably reasonably well know in their local area and not too hard to track down.

Know what you are buying, I bought 2 kites off seabreeze years ago when I first started, 11m and 15m fuels, both $1000. One was as new, the other flogged out, both described as new. The flogged out one from a kiter who consistently appears in Australian kite magazines. I can't blame anyone for trying to get a buck (not something I'd be comfortable doing) but I could have avoided paying too much by doing some more research first.

Actually the good one was from a chick, so I'd go with superlizard's comment and always buy from a girl .

I have had good luck buying a kite from a regular contributor to the forum, kite was everything he said it would be, its a great kite! Board was a little worse for wear, but half a day of patching and a new set of fins and the board works a treat. I did have a friend who happened to be traveling up the dudes way and checked it out and brought it back for me saving the shipping. All in all, good experience.
If you read this mr ok, all is very okay dokay!

Ive bought two kites and sold two on Seabreeze (different kites). Ive had great experiences, just do your research etc get heaps of photos and make your own judgement as to the reason the buyer gives for selling. If its 2 years old and been in use for that long, you get what you pay for. If it's 'as new' ask why is it being sold? If the seller gives you a bodgy reason, id think twice. A simple buyer & seller feedback system would be great. Its not 'naming and shaming', it makes sellers ensure their descriptions are accurate, and allows buyers to purchase with more confidence from people with a good reputation.

Hi everyone

Thanks for the posts and updates, particularly the first few that described the payment methods they used. Thought I would let you know how the “would be” purchase went.

The kite looked great in the photos.
Asking price was 1k, firm.
The seller was a recent member with only a couple posts.
I offered 1k including the postage and Aus Post Cash on delivery method as he wouldn't come down in price and I wanted the kite. Also said my offer would expire Wednesday, yesterday.

He would only sell if I paid up front, and wouldn't use the Aus Post. This didn't seam right to me as if i was selling a 1k kite that was in the condition I described, I would go ahead with the Aus Post COD. I decided not to pay up front.

Wednesday has been and gone so my offer is now closed. My gut feeling was this person (guy not girl) was legitimate and it was the kite I wanted, I just didn't want to risk it.

I've sold interstate on Seabreeze and have basically offered my reputation as a forum contributor as a guarantee that the gear is how I say it is (that, and my real name is in my profile). In each case the purchaser paid in advance and was super happy with the deal.

A person's word still means something if he or she is part of a community and wants to continue to enjoy community membership.
