Unfortunately static stretching before exercise has never been proven effective to reduce the risk of injuries in any sport, it's mostly a myth or an old trend. It's actually been proven that static stretching before exercise increases the risk of injury and decreases performance. Here is just an example of one article I could find for free: http://www.portalsaudebrasil.com/artigospsb/flex011.pdf

An effective warm-up routine should simulate the efforts done during the sport, so for kiteboarding a dynamic warm up is much more suitable.

If you really want to prevent injuries in kiteboarding it's all about working to strengthen the muscles mostly solicited in kiteboarding. Stronger back muscles = less back problems and better kite posture. Stronger leg muscles = better knee stabilization and more resistance to impacts.

Ask pro-kiters or any pro-riders in other board sports who are followed by up-to-date sports scientists...they all seem to spend a fair bit of time in the gym and you don't see them do static stretches so much anymore...

I agree. An effective warm up is essential in any kind of sport (ok, there are some exceptions where it´s not that important such as pool, chess, curling etc...) If you go the gym to beat your record in bench press do you then just go straight to the bench and put on loads of weights? Of course not, you warm up properly before putting your muscles and joints under great stress. What's the purpose? By warming up you aren't just warming up by increasing the blood flow, but preparing the joints or higher pressure. Inside the joints are synovial fluid and articular cartilage which by warming up get stiffer and more resistance to impacts. When you start the warm up it´s like sending a signal to the body to let it know that there will be some serious stress coming up, you better get ready!
Just like a car, do you wind the engine the first thing you do? Of course not, all the parts in the engine need proper lubrication to run smoothly.

When it comes to stretching. I´m not sure if I agree with you. It should at least not make things worse... I´ll get back on this point :)

The best injury prevention you can do is to actually "warm" your body up. Jogging, running.. my favorite star jumps are great. The best thing you can do is increase your muscle temperature, this has been proven to be preventative. The evidence for general stretching (i.e you haven't been diagnosed with tight muscles) to prevent injury whether it be active, passive or ballistic is very inconclusive. Take it as a grain of salt, but i figured its good for people to know where to put their time when they arm up. Open disclosure is I'm a pt student... speaking of.. should probably get back to studying.

from skating ramps for 10years you learn 'how' to fall, sliding down on pads or ass. learing how to bail has helped me in kiting more than you realise, being able to kick the board away or keep foot loose in straps whist being slammed by sets. touch terra firma i've yet to seriously harm myself, thats from the biggest stacks to hot loops, go instantly floppy when you hit, never tense up
learn the how to bail
thats my tip
