Kitesurfing "Support" group :) started on the sunny coast for all levels of kiting from beginners to advanced. We just use it to stay in contact with each other, help newbies to the sport, find people to go kiting with midweek, try out new spots on the coast, sink some coffee and a few cold beers occasionally.

So far 5 of us in the group who get together regularly (my girlfriend is getting her first kite tomorrow and doing her second lesson on Sat; I am just getting into jumping and able to get out into the waves) but all welcome to join us.

Also, if there are any potential sponsors looking to promote their gear on the sunny coast or help us out with subsidised kit to help get more people into the sport then drop me a line. Anyone keen to start some in other areas also let me know as I am down the Goldie and in Sydney occasionally but never know where to kite there. Also, anyone in Brisbane and surrounding areas welcome to join if you ever come up the coast.

Contact me at [email protected] if you are interested in joining us.
Cheers

Hey Orb

We also have plans to invade the Sunny Coast on 19th and 20th of January.

Gold Coast SEQKA members will be up for a weekend of social kiting and meet and greet.

Should be about 50 or so of us up there for the week end.

All hanging very well thanks Rooey - haven't seen you either for a while - I haven't strayed far from Mudjimba in a long time. Have a good one up at the lake, I'll hopefully be tearing some waves to shreds and pulling some nice airs tomorrow.

Any advice for kitesurfing in big shorebreaks would be appreciated, especially after the tragedy at Caloundra yesterday (I know it was a windsurfer).

The problem I had is that I lost my board just behind the shorebreak but I was getting blown in faster than my board and couldn't get back to it yesterday (winds about 25-30knots on a 12m kite). About a 4-5ft set came through and broke top to bottom and as I couldn't just dive under it like I do if I have lost my surfboard, I ended up copping it on my head. What should I have done?

I had put the kite straight up over my head but it meant I got held in place as the lip hit me and I got held under and then dragged about 20m under water as the kite loaded up low to the water... had to release my chicken loop safety which was jammed for a while... a good 25 second hold down for you surfers who know about hold downs.... as someone said in the other articles, if I had panicked I would have drowned for sure, it is just fortunate that I have surfed some much larger waves and had long hold downs so just relaxed to save oxygen while I was trying to get my emergency release unjammed! Just remember, relax and you will get to the surface, panic and your chances diminish rapidly.

So, what do I do if I get caught in a big shorey in future, where should the kite be, what do I do about getting back to my board etc?
Thanks
Oscar

Sometimes there isn't too much you can do except keeping yourself afloat - I have done done countless downwinders along that stretch over the past couple of years and many of them in huge surf - the main thing you want to do is keep the kite flying and not let your lines go slack - most people who kite in the surf will tell you to power your kite up back out to sea if a set is coming - watch out for your board though. If there is a big set coming the kite will pull you through the set and out the back. If you have your kite above your head or flying back to shore, the wave will wash you in and possibly hold you under as you say.

Only release the kite if it's in the water. Even though you have been surfing for many years, make sure you are not kiting in conditions beyond your ability.

Cheers

Yeah, surf is going to be good but the points are going to be crowded - what can you do - maybe see you up at Carties.

Is it better to use a surfboard or a twin tip if I am going to do a downwinder with a mate on Sunday? Also, if you are going to do a downwinder, do you use a smaller kite and surfboard as there is no need to be trying to go upwind?

Twin tips are for girls, so are straps on surfboards. Harden up and go strapless, waxless and boardless.....

ok so seriously:

Use the smallest possible kite you can get away with and try to use a surfboard(or something with a bit of volume or rocker). If you ask one of your mates he may have an old learner board with "giraffe" patterns on it, they are sick.....

Bit worried about having a bit of concrete with my breakfast as i am not sure how well i will float after that?

A giraffe board huh? I seem to remember that surfari looking nightmare floating around every now and then.

By the way, got screwed over by that guy selling me and paige our kites the other day... 3 of the struts on the 12 meter had holes in when it arrived and he won't take it back. what a joker!

It is preferred that people do not name and shame as it is my word against his. However, he is named and shamed on my site and I will make sure that no one else I know buys anything off the guy. Laurie is putting in place a way to rate people that you buy stuff off soon as he also wants to cut this thing out. The guy now rides North Kites and used to ride takoons, told me he was a team rider for Takoon and now is a team rider for North Kites but I spoke to the Takoon rep (Aaron Stonker) who told me the guy wasn't a team rider but just got a good deal... basically he has his head so far up his *&%^ that he probably believes his own rubbish.

Aaron was awesome and talked me through how to repair it and really helped me out over the phone and i would recommend him to anyone.

Awesome news all and what a great start to the new year:

I received a call today from a saffa by the name of Colin (Freeflow) who told me that he was in Cash Converters yesterday and he said he saw the most amazing brand new board sitting in one of the racks there for sale REALLY cheap... instead of buying it he came to seabreaze and looked under lost and found and saw my advert for a lost board. He then emailed me and phoned me to let me know it was there and that i should go down tomorrow and pick it up!

After being screwed over with my Kite by the guy who sold it to me from Vic, Colin has restored the faith that there 99.9% of the kiteboard community are honest and awesome people! Just a big thank you to Colin for his honesty and integrity and may Karma treat you the way you deserve to be treated for 2008!

Good news Orb74,kiteing equipment appears to be a great commodity for thieves from W.A to QLD,being of great resale value to the lowlifes that are targeting our cars, takeing advantage of opportunities at every popular kiteing location.Lets all keep a strong vigillance on our own equipment as well as our fellow kiters gear as this problem will only get worse as the kiteing population expands......dissappointing conditions for all those wanting to practice there kiteing skills on the Sunny coast again today, hope the weather improves for all of us as the conditions of late have been downright depressing....Roo

I hear you Roo, will definitely be more vigilant from now on... thanks again to Colin, went down to Cash converters today and guess what... it was my board!!! Got the police down there and should be getting it back in a couple of days.

As for conditions on the sunny coast, was speaking to Lee from the Kite shop in Cotton Tree and he was out yesterday at Cotton TreeMaroochydore and apparently took a big set wave on the head and got a MAJOR working over, must be about 6-8ft on some of the sets and he got a big hold down and nearly ran out of air.

Thinking Weyba again on the weekend if the wind dies down a bit like it shows on the graphs!

Just come back from a hectic session at Weyba, the wind was gusting up to 30 for a while there but my 10 handled it easily - just couldn't stand not kiting in my holiday. Ended up busting my board though after some hectic jumps - damn, I need a new board now...

Hay Orb,Sunseeker do you guy's know of any other launch sites at Weba Lake besides the end of Lake Weyba Drive/Lake View Cres,Eumarella Rd end ?, cause if ya look at Google Earth ,sth of the Cresent has some 'beach' which would make launching a lot easier.......(tried to get in from Old Hollett Rd but the track has been gated off)

Hey Meerkat, you are right, I think a few of us had a weeeee in the lake just before you came over from WA for a kite, was the water a bit warm for that time of year? [}:)] Mind you, anything would feel warm after WA!

As for weeee-bar, not sure of any other launching sites than the north side where we normally go. Went and had a look on the South side of the lake when the Northerly was blowing a few months ago but couldn't find a good spot so no help there... normally out in the surf now when the northerlies are blowing so never tried to hard to find anywhere. One thing I did notice though is that a lot of people launch from that tiny "beach" just as you hit the lake of Charlotte street... I always find it easier if you head about .5kms to the left when you hit the lake and launch next to the Catamaran that is always on the shore.

For all beginners there, slide your feet along the bottom as there are heaps of stingrays in the water, stepped on a huge one the other day when I was running to help my girlfriend get her kite up, scared the #$%^ out of me... it could also have been a baby bull shark, felt about 30cm high when I stepped on it and it shot off without too much disturbance. The rays normally whirl up heaps of mud as they take off!

There are also stone fish boys an girls so get up an riding an wear booties
Lake Cootharabah is probably a lot safer as far as rays an stone fish goes,it has a better launch spot also.
