Hey peeps,

I'm heading to Gladstone early April for work for a few days.

Is there any point in taking a few days either side of my work trip and doing some kitesurfing?

Whats the kiting like there?

I've heard Tannum Sands is alright. I think being central QLD you should get some reasonable breeze that time of year

Since I'm foiling now, flat and 10+ knots is fair game. I don't need 30 knots and double head.

What's the depth at this tannum sands place?

Out the front it's as deep as any beach. In the creek it's plenty for a foil on high tide dropping. Tide are big here make sure you check out the tide times.

crocs, there are crocs everywhere from there north, they manly hang in the fresh up the creeks, I never worry about them unless I see one.

If if you really want to go to a magic spot, yeppoon in 2 hours north and it's like the pond on steroids flatwater for as far as you can see! Worth the trip up there.

Good info men cheers

I don't need flat either... foil makes all chop buttery smooth.

Hey Plummet,

Tannum is the place to go. You don't have to worry about crocs or box jellyfish as they are few and far between. Not sure on wind conditions during April as I have only been living there since December. There is usually plenty of wind, but the waves are ordinary.

You should be able to get 10Kn in April, but planning a couple of extra days this far out would be risky. Planning to finish work by 4 to get in an arvo session would probably be better bang for buck.

I have to take a punt and book the extra days and hope for wind or not do it!.... Got to book the flights now.

It be safe to say that the wind would typically be between 10 and 20 knots?

When I am in a different country I like to eat as many as their animals as possible. So bring on the consumption of platapus, kangaroo, and crocs.

Oh,, Option number 2 is to fly into Brisbane, rent a car and take a couple of days driving up to Gladstone kiting along the way.

Is this option worthwhile?

I see there's some sunshine coast then the road spears inland for quite a while.

What's the better chance of wind? somewhere on the sunshine coast or Gladstone?

Flag the drive up from brisbane idea. Rental hard is crazy expensive to drive up and drop off at gladstone. It will be fly into gladstone, hire a car and then drive to where the wind is. Tannum sands or yepoon.
Where is the kiting in yepoon? got a google link?

Kiting in Tannum is not bad mate usually wind is good after 2PM. Creek mouth on the dropping tide is the go as you get a couple of extra knots ..Set up on the grassy area next to the surf club. Haven't seen a crock or herd of anyone getting nailed by a stinger for years. Surfs pretty crap but 1.5 hrs south at wreck rock (near Agnes waters )usually a bit bigger. Also the mouth of the boyne river is not bad for a bit of flat water just a bit shallow on low tide ..if you want to check conditions there is a cam mounted on the surf club, Google GPC (Gladstone ports Corporation)and scroll down to beach webcams and click on Tannum sands for a live feed..
Good luck mate

Chur men, Chur!

I've commited to a couple of says prior to my work trip. So that gives me 3 afternoon seabreezes to try and find and take advantage of.

Of course if theres no wind and its a waste of time its all your fault!

Is there any toxic leaching from the nearby min tailing dams into the water at Tannum Sands?

Kemp is right. Yeppoon is da bomb! An amazing place I am dreaming of going to, for both land and water kiting.

I'm leaning towards hauling arse to yeppoon. How deep is that beach? is foiling an option? or would you have to drag for ages to to get to 1.5m?

depends on the tide, if its low you will have to walk 20m maybe. at high tide 5m of walking. also depends what beach.

edit: if you just going off the beach, not looking for flatwater, you may aswell stay in gladstone. but if you want some mega lagoons to play in, come to yeppoon

Booking a car from Brissy is a pretty good option. Lots of places to visit on the trip up (if you haven't already) and you're bound to catch a couple of spots with 10Kn+.

Except its $600 to hire a car at brissy and drive it to Gladstone for 3 days.

Looks like I have a landkiting buddy that will be in yepoon on that weekend. So I may even leave the foil at home and dust off the landboard,,,,,

So I here. Billiard table smooth, wide and hard. I have offer to go for a fang in a buggy when there. To put it in context. Billiard table hard smooth sand in a buggy would be like fangen butter flat on s race hydrofoil..... except a lot faster than the hydrofoil!
