My mate runs a kite school in Dahab. Go onto facebook and look up James Hodge.

School name is Happy Kite or something similar. I know that they have rooms at their school for 10 euros or something like that. They're in a prime location and James is from the UK.

Rental gear no probs and he does cheap gear also.

Hope this helps.

I kited Ras Sudr for 2 weeks in June this year. Three hours from Cairo on the Red Sea. Excellent. Best time in Egypt (for kiteboarding) is summer (thermally generated winds). June July August is best. September is still good. Ras Sudr is the ideal place good for smooth, shallow lagoon style kiteboarding. And so uncrowded you'll feel lonely. Air fare not cheap but once there it's cheap to stay.

I can forward you the email I sent to my mates if you PM me. It has all the info. Prices, pictures, booking contacts, my daily AM and PM wind records, kite sizes to take, ideal tide times, etc ............

Rob

PS It's a 2 MB email but I can delete the tourism pics if that's to big

Easy.... go to Hurghada, Colona Watersports is in the Colona Resort which is 5 mins from the airport. Best time to go would be June to September. Many of the top pro's and companies do their product photoshoots there. Pretty cheap and a great team of guys that run it.

Take small kites.

I went to El Gouna (near Hurghada) on the Red Sea in April. It was pretty crowded at the main beach.

I hired gear and was generally disappointed for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the hire gear was at least 3 seasons old and had been flogged. It was pretty pricey at around 70Euro per day. Secondly, the wind came up overnight and died out by around lunchtime. Seeing as the hire place was only open from 9am, this meant that i only got in a couple of hours kiting per day, not worth the price i ended up paying. If you had your own gear, you could happily kite from sunrise.

So I would recommend taking your own gear if you can, and take small kites. The wind i experienced was the same as a strong WA seabreeze.

Colona Watersports are the Egypt Importer for Naish Kites, Nobile and Shinn and the gear is always up to date.

Even better, take your own gear.

Lots of Euros are choosing Sri lanka over Egypt over this summer - Am surprised more Aussies havent discovered it considering it is the Aussie winter and SL is much cheaper to get to and the instructing and living costs are much cheaper as well. There is only one school in this location so the ocean and lagoon are empty - flatwater and waves and super downwinders

Its only small - 4 Double rooms - and is pretty booked but certainly worth a look - Ralph and Fabio use it for testing and remaking protos - and the Best boys Joe and Miguel have discovered it !

Mischi (swiss) and Leo (french) run a cool operation and thats some credit coming from an Aussie!

Egypt cool place wind 24/7. Hurgarda is where I went stayed in at a resort closer to town, then took a minivan (cheap 10mins) to Megawish resort Colona Watersports (if you don't stay there you can store your stuff there no problem). Many other good places to kite in Egypt as well. Been to Sri Lanka as well great place but not for kiting though, no wind.

Hey Jon - Im not sure what time of year you were there but betwee May and October at Kalpitya - 2 hours north of the International airport there is constant wind in the range of 15 - 25 knots. Check the guru link below and the archives! Hate to say it mate but if you went South to galle or East to Aragum bay and were there b/w May and Oct - You missed it! Check any wind forcaster and select Kalpitya or Pattalam - you will be surprised.

Heres the link to Guru FYI www.windguru.cz/115722
