so does your wind meter measure wind speed or wind strength??

does all the BullS&^% air pressure, smoke, rain and humidity and such crap affect your kite but not affect your wind meter??? (read: your-avaerage-hand-held-fan-type-wind-meter)

I know the answer..... but i'm not telling you!!

Wind speed is not affected by air density.

However, a home made wind speed measuring device made from a (working) PC fan and multimeter - as shown in photos on my profile and previous posts - is affected slightly by changes in air density.

The difference is not significant as the tolerance for error in a wind speed device is usually orders of magnitude more than the error due to density fluctuations.

Finally, most wind meters are based on a fan coupled to a multimeter. The only missing element from my personal wind meter is a scale in knots. I dont need one. As each fan/multimeter combination requires its own calibration, if you build one of these yourself you will need to construct your own scale to read the wind speed in knots.

I was going to add a witty and clever yet mildly demeaning retort, but then I noticed you are a 30yo male from the NT who uses his real name for his Seabreeze username.

I got out in the rain yesterday, loved it, and not just because there was so few people out!
Although the wind dropped off to nothing i looked around and out of 4 kites i was the only one that stayed in the air. There was one guy running up and down the beach pulling everyones felled kites out of the swash. I had a blast out there even though the wind was light i just enjoyed the fresh feeling of the rain, the velvet look of the water and the updrafts made for some fun jumps. Yes upwind was a little hard but the wind was near onshore so u could run pretty much parrallel to the beach so when the wind did drop off i kicked off my board and body dragged in 50m and crab walked back to my gear. much easier than walking back up wind against southerly on the WA coast!

Kiting in the rain is awesome.

Packing down with sticky wet said isnt great but it clumps together so before each FOLD of the kite brush the clumped sand off. Far easier than dry sand that gets EVERYWHERE.

Kiting in the rain is loadsa fun but when it started Hailing on me back in the uk, I decided to get out...... That Hurt, 8m weather, sideways rain/Hail and windchill -2/3.

Still, I had a wicked sess and the beach to myself before the Hail

on friday I kited under the rain and at night (it was not raining anymore at night)
it was great. we were 3 on water.

I noticed that in dry warm air, a 12meter kiter has the same power as a 10m one in cold wet air.

but we feel the wind speed with our ears and skin, not the wind power, same for windmeters.

Did you know the total wind energy on earth is made of about 2% of the sun energy hitting earth.

Yes you can do it. kite is wet, heavy and slow tho.

Have you ever stuck your hand out a window doing 110kms in the rain?

Thats what kiting at any speed feels like!! Farkin bullets, pins and needles Still fun tho

Just wanted to throw this back up there. It was doing better than expected but now seems to be losing steam.
If its dead I thank you all for your input and look forward to the first front of the winter.

Now now, there is no need to write a formative essay on this issue

orright, on my third beer and the inner geek is coming out... just a question i've often pondered when out kiting in the rain (which sucks, by the way)

If you had a 20kt rainy southerly, would it have more "power" (for want of a better word) than a 20kt NE, because the air is wetter and denser and therefore had more mass?

Feeling bored & geeky to.
No expert but feel like blah ing on with what I do know.....

I think rain is not going to give you more power, but lets talk about temperature.
Wind energy (not quite the same as force by the way) is related to velocity cubed & density. So denser air should be more 'powerful' but the effect is not nearly as dramatic as higher wind speed.
Air is compressable so air will be denser if at higher pressure and at the same temp.
Air also expands when heated - PV=mRT
most of the time this means pressure x volume = 'somenumber' x temperature.
So this kind of means that if you double the temperature and keep the pressure the same the density (sort of opposite of volume) will halve. Only thing is temp is in kelvin & 0degrees C = 273Kelvin (I think) so if you change the temp from 0 deg C to 27 deg C this is only a 10% change in Kelvin so density will only change by 10%.
There is also a relationship between viscosity & temperature. Viscosity (which relates more to drag than lift - now starting to stretch the grey cells) for most normal fluids increases as temperatures decreases. Not sure if this would offset the above.

In summary: Lower temp should equal more powerful wind, but effect should be pretty small.

Here endith the lesson (until someone who really does know what they're talking about decides to join in!)

Pointless threads hey? HTFU hey?
Just getting some interesting conversation going while there's no wind.
Or do you and Phrase think Im sat at the beach with my kite in one hand and my laptop in the other, just waiting for your pearls of wisdom to make up my mind about when to kite.

Oh and "WTF is Juice"?
Gimme a break!
