yes... its another post on behaviour at pelican pt.
thank god CALM haven't been watching of late because what they would see is: landing and launching from the down wind side of the path even in the shadow of the trees
kiters riding in the no kite zone
kiters jumping in front of other kiters and making them have to stop and avoid collisions
kiteloops in the launch and land area
down turns to spray people watching from the parking lot
learners crashing kites into the trees
people teaching themselves, friends teaching friends/families
kite lines being left strewn across the path
launchers waiting a couple minuets trying to undo tangles on launching with the kite on the down wind side of the path and the rider in the water messing around
videoing in the no kite area
kites left with no consideration to other kiters kites on the lawn
dropping kites in front of people/on people in the landing area
lofting into trees... the list goes on

the problem is that most the people doing this are not approachable/dont speak English or dont take the friendly advise...
of late there have been up to 17 kites out and only 5 locals/guy from Perth, the people who are doing these things are not locals and therefore dont care about maintaining access to peli although the kite going in to the tree was a learner from Perth

its only a matter of time before we are banned from peli altogether with this happening

please if you see this happening can you do something about it especially if you can speak Spanish (not French... i tried that). i was launching a person thats been kiting all week in the strong wind, she had no idea what i was saying (sheet out) and nearly got a hot launch after i gave the kite over to one of the group because i didnt want to have the blame for a beginners accident.

and just for interest here's a list of the topics on this before...

maybe at every kiting beach they should have a big sign with all the kiting rules for that beach on it.

Hi there,

I thought there was a sign advising of the local rules...

Also, do not remember that a nearly CLEAR ocean is less than 10 minutes drive from Peli Point.

But yeah, Peli point is on the way back from work...

Kitecrazzy,

So you seem to mainly blame visitors...

I do not know the sign in place. Would you have any opportunities to take a shot of it? If it can not be understood from visitors, it should be a lesson for the design of future signs, which should probably be based on images, plans, sketches, etc... that can be understood from non english speaking visitors.

However, I would think that a minimal level of English could be read (even if not verbally understood) by most overseas visitors.

Maybe the reason of their apparent low level of safety results from a lower standard in safety and kiting conditions overseas

Sorry for my poor English

fver: the sign is the large billboard style green thing next to the path as you come from the car park although most people dont walk past this as they cross the grass, it has a roof over it even.
if you are saying im unfairly blaming the visiting kiters you are in turn accusing the locals who have been trying to keep access to this spot safe, lots of time and effort has been put in by a lot of different people to keep access as it is even if it is restricted by a no kite zone and associated bouys.
locals try as much as they can to do the right thing, visitors be they from overseas or 5 min up the road need to learn the rules of Peli, often when launching people they ask what the rules are, they are taking the correct initiative but for the rest they put our spot at risk, even if you dont think its a spot worth keeping access to its your obligation you dont ruin it for the rest who do think it is.
ok, to narrow it down... i was going to put up a name and shame but its not right!

Hey Kitecrazzy,

Sorry I did not mean to attack your comments and generally agree with them. Yes Peli Point is a narrow launching/landing spot and fitting heaps of kiters there is probably possible but not straightforward and I aknowledge your efforts in trying to (self?)regulate this spot.

IMHO, Peli Point is crowded, gusty, potentially dangerous and the water is sometimes suspicious... (I have a limited experience at this spot as I learnt here). Also, everyone has his own preferences and flat water is not mine (is it becasue I do not come from a wakeboarding background). I am lucky enough to be able to choose between the ocean and the river. So you will be happy to hear that I am staying clear from this spot!?! I am wondering if all the kiters @ Peli Point choose it as a prefered location or by obligation because the ocean is too far???

Anyway, good luck in your quest to preserve Peli Point.

Fred

this isnt about when **** happens, its about guys who are going for mobe 5s and kiteloops launching over a busy bike path and choosing to ride on the down wind side of the bouys.
i dont do this and neither do any of the regulars down there, its people new to the spot making it dangerous and eventually banned, i would expect it of you to understand this waveslave

PR: duno why you are so interested in my pubes but once you show some balls and use that fancy kite of yours to its true potential im happy to talk about your pube obsession.
SM: yes your right, im jealous of a guy doing mobe 5s. im also jealous of every kiter on the KPWT but dont think yourself so highly as your doing the same tricks as people who have been doing the sport for less than half the time you have in many circumstances.

Hey Crazzzy,

Dont be bother by this kind of comments. You are doing the right think. If not us, who will fight for this sport to get safe and accepted?
Definitelly not the monkies (even from the space)!
Any way, Merry Christmas everybuddy.

It aint safe, never will be just by the nature of the sport.
Its extreme

You see Kiting needs nature to work
Nature is unpredictable
Kiting will never be safe no matter what new fangled release system you got.

...and there will always be some dickhead who ruins it for everyone else

with current growth in kitesurfing i give pelli prob 2 years max before someone dies, gets seriously injured or its banned altogether.

Must suck for all you city kiters with rules, regs, crowds etc.
Whenever i go to my nearest secluded beaches, there's no-one there.

SO...If i was to travel to a crowded metro spot and feel like a kite what's the best way to identify someone who could give me a run down on the acceptable behaviour?
thanks.

its pretty simple and should be done when kiting any spot for the first time-
read & abide local guidelines/rules (peli pt says it is not suitable for beginners)
ask a local
have insurance
know your limits
be safe; if in doubt dont go out!!! RESPECT

And all this bollox of its not me, in my view some of the locals are the worst at doing tricks, spraying car park and some of the aforementioned, remember if you look good and jump near to shore, people who arent so good will try and copy and thats when things go wrong!!!

Who wants to see someone die? Not me, remember its up to us all to keep our sport as safe as possible and stop people who are putting us responsible riders to shame!
