Yes, kitesurfing is fading out of the "extreme sport" category, but it still becomes extreme, when those modern depower and safety systems stop working.
It would be a good experience for all intermediate + kiters to ride the old stuff for a week or so. Just to learn what to do when the sugar coat of kitesurfing melts away and they experience the real power of the wind. It was not that much of a question of muscle power as one may think. There were girls ripping it even 10 years ago (inc. my ex GF). It would be great to see them again.

Looks like theres enough interest and certanly enough old gear. CORE JAM is not on this year over the AUST day long weekend....
Sunday 30th Jan looks like a day that many people could make, with the wind providing the goods.

RETRO kite day will we conducted on the offshore side of Woodies. A rescue boat will be provided. This is not an official event it is a small get together. Safety systems etc are not effective so we would rather kitmares get blown out to sea.

The retro kite day will start when the wind kicks in, bring all retro gear. be prepared to test as much as you want and swap.

During the day 2 informal comps will be held:
Hang-time/kiteloop comp: there will be 2 separate prizes but this comp will be run together.
"Lou Wainman" wakestyle award: another prize......the best move landed clean, as judged by you peers. All will be videoed and we are hoping to get Paul Smythe or any other good snappers to get some still footage.

why dont we include an informal car boot kite gear sale(retro and modern ) as well? Be an ideal opportunity to demo and purchase 2nd hand gear. Ive got heaps of good stuff I want to get rid of.

In response to your query, I still use Flysurfer kites. I mainly enjoy the pull, the speed and the hangtime of one of their model (the SPEED model). My current quiver is:
2004 4.5m XTC. I use it once or twice a year, and extensively used it at Kitestock 2 years ago... I got incredibly trashed
2007 10 m Speed2 (still my favorite)
2007 8 m Psycho3
2009 12 m Speed3 (if only they had a 10m within the Speed3 series! ... )

One day, Australia too will understand the advantages of foils... but not tomorrow

I have a collection of foils in the shed, including:
2004 4.5m Flysurfer (still in use)
2004 7m Flysurfer.
2005 10 m Speed1 Flysurfer (the legendary original light wind weapon)

They all fly. I'd love to try them again, in particular the Speed1.

I also have a Best Yarga 13m 2005 C in pretty good nick. Was thinking I'd like to find a home for it. 5th line and well behaved so pretty safe for a C kite.

pay it forward thread "wdric" donated a kite for the locals in PNG via "in the loop" so i though i might as well give up the" wall hanging" CO2, cost bugger all ($20) to post to In the Loop although you might want check how any kites they want considering excess baggage costs nowdays...
looks like there is a swag of shed fillers still around that could bring some joy to someone!!

IN MY DAY ...we thought we were lucky with an old blue tarp,a few metres of 100 pound breaking strain,sawn off broomstick for bar after we finished cleaning the lake with a spoon ,2 footy socks with a tent peg for a harness ,a couple of fence palings tied together with a pair of dunlop volleys nailed to the top if you were really lucky

Ive seen a few guys try that on 4 line kites to no avail, at least if they pull the "new wave safety devices" things dont go too pear-shaped. Kook proof lines are not kook proof, when kooks want to make their own modifications

Ha ha - didn't have it that easy - I started on a Naish Aero I 10m (that I later fitted with a 5th line too Rich ). What a dog of a kite and equal to the most exxy kite I have bought yet!

I'll ping ITL about PNG too. Cheers.
