Haha!

We're experimenting!

The new ratings are all about your perception of what you like and what you don't.

We'll be giving it a run for a while, and see if what happens .. maybe you'll like it .. maybe you won't .. maybe it won't be used .. maybe it will be good fun!

At the top of each post is a thumbs up/down icon - the concept is easy:

* If you reckon the post is a ripper/makes you laugh/is good value .. thumbs up.

* If you reckon it's offensive, rude, inappropriate .. thumbs down.

* If you don't care/not interested .. do nothing.

As moderators, we apply our perception on posts and do our best to gauge whether a topic/post has gone too far.

The written word is so difficult to understand, especially when it's heated - many times people read things in the mood they are in, rather than the mood of the author.

On the flipside, popular members may win prizes!

There are no rules - it's just another way for you to provide your opinion.

Let's see what happens!

Enjoy .. Laurie

Great idea Laurie, could be interesting... even posting some stats on what's hot, or what's **?

On other thing, so in the forum of a topic (i.e. - this one) If I click a thumbs up for Pearl or sburlo does that reflect their stats or whatever or is it only related to the inital thread poster?

Cheers!

P.s. Like what you have done with the site!

Yeah! We'll see how it runs for a while and see how you use it - the idea is in its infancy. Last thing we want is a race to be Mr Unpopular (although some posters have a natural talent for that ) Maybe prizes for Mr/Ms/Mrs Popular?

A Thumbs Up rates both the Post & the Author, regardless of whether it's the initial thread poster, or a reply.

Thought to keep it simple and fun to start with, and if you like the idea then we can expand on it. Even had an idea of a filter where you could choose to only view Thumbs Up topics, or hide posts from unpopular authors, or, if you're a drama queen, find where the Thumbs Down topics are! Haha.

The aim is to encourage a good time, provide an easy way to voice your opinion, and continue to make these forums a great place to visit.

Haha! I'm not immune!

Compared to other posts, it has insufficient votes to register on the graph.

or .. the 'goodness' or 'badness' of a post is graphed relative to all other rated posts. If the most popular post has 100 positive votes, then a post with 1 positive vote won't rate (which is what happened above)

Hey Laurie,

What about having a thumbs up/down for the images section?
That way you could rate an awesome photo (like this one: www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=3909 ) and then later on you could view based on how many thumbs up/down certain images got?

Also, sites like this one (slashdot.org/ ) have been using a 'karma' system for years, they get in the order of 20,000 posts a day so have gotten most of the kinks worked out. One of the ideas they use is having a 'karma cap' of 5, so the max score a post can get to is 5. This means that your vote does count. At the moment with the seabreeze system if any post is higher than say 10, then you can click on the thumbs up icon somewhere else and it doesn't change colour, even slightly. A cap of 5 and minus 5 alleviates this problem.

They also do things like not allowing you to vote on topics you've replied to, and only letting people with high karma vote, which might not be the right thing to do on this forum (at least until we get a few more people onboard!).

It's a great idea, and I'm sure it will work out well. It's fantastic to see a site so well maintained

P.S. Posting this in the kiting section because they seem to be a bit more interested in the ratings than the poleys...

Great idea being able to rate posts.
Pretty much the same concept as the 'mana' rating I've seen in many International Forums.
Allows everyone to offer an opinion on who's posting what.

It's ironic, (or is that Iconic?)

I vent my spleen at some forum lowness and go green.

Heaven help the red side, if I said something inciteful.

do you only rank on that one post or does it accumulate over many posts?

Hey Laurie
Anything you can do about the fact that when you vote, it takes you back to the top of the page. A little annoying especially when your right at the bottom. No biggy, just wondering.

>> it takes you back to the top of the page.

Agreed. Originally, it didn't refresh at all because of that problem, so people wrote saying voting had no effect, so we added the refresh, and now.. It's definitely something we want to resolve.

>> Censorship is a flawed concept

Maybe, but it works ok. Ring a talkback radio station and abuse them, write foul letters to the newspaper or show your wanger to a TV camera and most likely your stuff won't make it to air/print/screen - it will be censored.

The goal of this forum is easy: We all kite for fun. For the buzz. This forum is about about keeping that going, learning new stuff about it, finding better ways of doing it, tweaking your gear, sharing your experiences - whatever - to make kiting better ... and that's what I believe most people are here for.

and your idea of connecting is via the use of profanity ?
if this forum gets international exposure, the least it can maintain is some standard of 'intelligent communications' without the need for profanity.
since when did it become necessary to express oneself or communicate by being the lowest denominator on the IQ scale ?

'The Experiment'. ??
I feel like a laboratory rat running for my life on the internet treadmill.
Fleeing from a mad moderator/nutty professor with an insane laugh.
>> Will censorship using icons become the new modern method of forum moderation ? <<
Call it nu-mod.
Or mod-mod.
haha
Call it thumb-sucking.

Forum moderators could very well become redundant.
Kicked out of their job by a silly little picture.

But the experiment is already conclusive.
A total failure.
The lab rats died in their filthy cages from boredumb and lack of inspirational text.
The site stinks of rodent faeces.
The bunsen burner is running out of gas and the forum-flame is slowly fading.

Thumb note:
Free-thinking adults wishing to communicate on an open internet forum have two options.
Read the stuff...or
Click the mouse.
You decide.

I've got the seabreaze sticker, now all I need is the Waveslave T-Shirt.....no I will not settle for a cap.

Change is good as it brings out the best/worst in people...can be entertaining.

Laurie, I feel the T-Shirts are sick, but a bit pricey. Overall, site has gone through a good change. Recon the voting thing is interesting, but not necessary, as 99% of threads die anyway. Voting is for comps. and politics, forums are for infotainment.

Happy Easter

Dear Laurie,
Cheers regards your email.
It's always a pleasure to connect with my forum moderator.
A real live person...not some icon picture.

While we are on the subject of thumb-votes....
I did a quick, little survey of my own.
I tallyed-up the number of thumb-votes in the most current 8 threads (excluding this thread).
Out of a total of 154 posts that ranged over these 8 threads;
there was a total of 8 thumb-votes.
8 ???
Seems insignificant, doesn't it ?

Our records show over 2000 votes have been cast by several hundred different members.

The little icon indicator has 5+/- steps, and of course a positive vote can offset a negative vote, so it's a bit difficult trying to reverse count the number of votes from the icons.

Hope that helps!

lol.
Wow!
2000 votes in less than 2 weeks.
I wonder what your experiment is truely revealing ? ....
That writing words is a bit tricky and clicking thumbs is much easier ?

Can you imagine if those 2000 replies had been real responses of free-thought and formed of clever text....
rather than a bunch of mindless thumb-sucking clicks ?
That would mean some hot forum action, man.
Music to your ears, Laurie.
And mine.

Instead we get....
One anon. grunt for a neg-vote.
Two anon. grunts for a posi.
No grunts for 'not interested'.
hahah

TALK, goddamnit.
I mean, after all....
This IS a discussion forum.

The presence of a little, thumb-vote icon indicator fully retards discussion.
It only encourages anonymous icon clicking.
Positive clicks negating negative clicks.
Oh my God !

Thumb Note:
If you are critical of what I write.....
Tell me why in real words.
Be discerning, find my faults, judge me....
But take it easy on the trigger, clicker.
TALK, goddamnit.
