Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying I'm happy that sharks eat people in WA. I'm just saying that I often read posts about fantastic WA wind conditions. Then I look at our local chart and wonder when it will get out of the red. Then I hear another report of a swimmer or diver being taken, and suddenly QLD feels like a pretty good place to go in the water. South of Airlie Beach that is.
Do you really think that there are less sharks off se qld. To test your theory I dare you to do some bodydragging off fraser Island, or stradboke .Se qld has plenty of whites in winter/spring time and bulls/tigers all year around. The fact that not many attacks occur is only down to the fact that sharks aren't as dumb as most people think and we are not their food source.
Yeah, I know there's plenty around. I'm in Hervey Bay and I drive passed Vic Hislop's shark show on the way to the beach just in case I needed reminding! I also know the stats on total numbers of attacks. We do have a lot more people in the water in SE QLD though, I guess safety in numbers helps.
I hated body dragging when I was learning, heels straps were the go.
hervey bay and se qld, shxtholes that they are, still get great whites in winter.
one thing about qld though is that the wind is usually onshore and you generally kite close to the beach in shallow water
A lot of the wa footage i have seen especially wavesailors/ kiters is guys tacking perpindicular to the coast to get upwind and heading a loong way offshore. broken UJ/fin/kite line would be scary
