I will be heading up to the Sunny Coast on the long weekend and am wondering what the waves are like up there atm. I only started kiting this season and can easily go up wind, do turns and have just started trying to jump (with not much luck). Will i be able to surf the waves up there? Any tips? (yes i have read the article on wave riding)

thanks in advance.

yes there are waves here atm
Your best bet is the caloundra river mouth or the maroochy river mouth
both have smaller waves on the inside for you to get the feel of waves
- outging tide is needed - but be careful not to lose your board
Sunday looks good
have fun

about chest high out the back - not clean sloppy onshore
but rideable - it will get better if the wind goes back to s.e

hey felix, if the wind's up (S to NE) come up to maroochydore mouth, i'll be out there on my sonic

only works well on an outgoing tide though. also not a good place to drop your kite, so be careful. there is flat water inside, and waves out the back. i'll be up here fri, sat, mon probably. there might not be enough wind for your 9 though. you can fly the sonic if you're keen.

At your skill level Caloundra Bar is not the place for you to learn to ride waves.

Rocky launch area and massive runout tides will make you nervous. Caloundra bar at the moment is really only suitable for confident, competent kiters.

nah man just me this weekend, hence i will be out on the water if the wind's up

that 17-18 knots will almost certainly not eventuate. to give you an idea, if it's reading 15 knots SE at the maroochy station, it's actually 12-13 knots. on a runout tide in the maroochy mouth you will need a minimum of 12-13 knots reading on the graph to even get close to moving. the maroochy station is rather optimistic in its readings.....

oh and echo: yeah i have. there was a high tide there last weekend and you could cruise across from the river to the waves on the other side. it was pretty choppy but there were some more decent waves there than on the southern side for some reason

had 2 sessions last week riding the right hander right in front of pin cushion
nice and long and clean
then just cut across behind the pin back into the river - 2 tacks and straight back in position - sweet - did about 10 circuits before i got dizzy

Not yet mate... had a meeting with the surgeon on tues and he said not until Feb. However, I might start on the surfboard without straps in a couple of weeks just cant go over any rough stuff or do any floaters ect... Feel really lucky though, he said when he did the op the muscle had already turned brown (dead) and he sewed it up regardless although expecting the amputation. 2 hrs later and I would have lost it for certain. If I was in nambour it would have been close to another week later... moral of the story, ffs get private cover as our public system is totally fuxed.

cross our fingers for some wind on saturday

I'd say he was looking at the coastal waters forecast...

Southeast Coast Waters, Double Island Point to Point Danger:
Friday until midnight: SE/E winds 10/15 knots, increasing to 15/20 knots north of Cape Moreton during the evening. Inshore, lighter SW/SE winds early tending E/NE in the afternoon south of Cape Moreton. Seas 1.2 metres, rising to 1.7 metres north of Cape Moreton during the evening. A decreasing 1.5 metre E'ly swell. Isolated showers, mainly morning and evening.
Saturday: SE winds 15/20 knots, reaching 20/25 knots north of Cape Moreton. Lighter SW/SE winds inshore early. Seas 1.7 to 2.2 metres. Scattered showers.
Sunday: SE winds 15/20 knots, reaching 20/25 knots north of Cape Morton.

Surgeon was Bernard Tamba-Lebbie. I couldnt speak more highly of him.

Hey Echo, I see your forum activity means you're nearly ready to go out - either that or you have burned out your Guitar Hero controller...

...I had a wicked session last Sunday at Maroochydore with Nick and had a couple runs up the North side of pincushion - it reminded me of those days we were doing some filming. Can't believe how much pop my new board has (Cardboards Tempo). Can do a railey without even trying.

Going up to Borumba Dam this weekend for some wakeboarding - will catch up soon.

i know i can get going in 15knots with my 9m Rebel although it isn't much fun (I can even get going in 13knots but have to work the kite so much). I have never actually done a down-winder but I was thinking of doing one from castaways to sunshine beach. would 15 knots be enough to have some good fun in the surf? (even just cruising around is fun to me )

Ps: if 15knots isn't enough ill go to Maroochydore and steal your kite Neil

come up tomorrow dude, the forecast has changed (again) and i have a good feeling that it should be all right. got out today for a few hours but you had to stay in the current, the wind was pretty light. the tide will start running in at 3.30 tomorrow so get out on the water before that

btw downwinders are gay, you won't have any fun until you can ride down the line, ride toeside both directions and feel confident looping the kite aggresively when on a wave. maroochy is a good place to practice.

Got out today at maroochy for the first time since the accident, just used the surfboard strapless so if I hit any sand I would just fall off without twisting or putting pressure on the leg. Actually was a lot less impact on my leg then I thought it would be... cant believe how much the river has changed. Thanks Bannaboy for the ride down there too.
