Actually I made that vid, different Andrew!

Combined hooked unhooked is what he's talking about in the interview. The point is to throw a big loop hooked in then do a handle pass. Sometimes he doesn't make the pass and then yes it looks pointless. Bigger more technical jumps. Like he says.

That film was kn fantastic!
I think it was the best "looking" kite clip ive ever seen.
Sweet time lapse footage, the pan shot of kitestock? Motion control head? That stuff turns me on.
Some serious high speed video in there too.
Hats off to ya, great footage and clever post production.
And no irrelevant pestering of dying seabirds!

Andy G

that is the most impressive bit of editing i've ever seen..

i've watched it about 6 times just to check out the bits i miss each time...

not sure whether to say it was awesome or insane...

Im interested in what gear and software is used too, extremely impressive.

some of that compositing is just too slick.

Thanks for the comments! I got it colour graded in my living room har har. Shot on a crappy GS500, the procinema mode is not bad, mostly shot that way with a 1/350 shutter, image stab off to give slightly better res apparently, I stay zoomed in as much as poss when I shoot, most kite vids people are just too far away. For slomo I shoot interlaced, which gives horrible blown out highlights but the cam effectively records 50fps so you render it progressive at 50% speed. Then used twixtor for the mega slo shot, it creates intermediate frames. Edited in Vegas.

Adam and Susi's stuff was shot on a Sony A1 (I think), 1/50 shutter interlaced HD downressed to progressive SD. I thought the 3CCD GS500 actually produced a better image.

The motorised pan head I made out of lego :-) It got blown all over the place in 20kn, stabilised with deshaker.

PS Special thanks to Ruben, Susi and Adam for the use of their footage.

Nice to see some cred for your latest vid at last... I think everyone was so stunned at the AGM by the vid that it took a while to fully appreciate- and get some feedback. You're the guru, I'm always amped to see what the next vid has going on, as you seem to keep the fresh ideas coming, keep it up bro,

Top effort!!
cheers

True That.
Andy, great work mate. I mean- WOW!!!
I love watching Rueben in action, i think he's got mad skills, but that is the- best- editing i've seen in a long while. Please tell us it's gonna be available to download like the other kitecinema stuff so as it doesn't take 3 fifths of forever to watch. look forward to seeing more of your work bro, maybe some local lads. Who knows, with the right angle you could probably make even me look like a pro.... Maybe.....Probably not.... i suck.

Hi, wow that’s some noice video editing right dar, couple of questions, still looking (well actually kind of holding off) for a video cam and you were saying about zoom being important when shooting kite surfing... do you think an optical zoom of 10 with a digital zoom of 20 would be enough?

I am looking at getting the Sony hdr hc7 but the amount of zoom is a sticking point so not too sure. Most of my (or someone else while i ride) shooting will be from the beach at dudes riding waves.. can buy a waterproof housing which is probably a good idea even if not going into the water to protect from the sand but probably wont be out there in the water trying to shoot.

Also do you use or would think its worth using a polarize filter if you could when shooting on water?

Forget digital zoom it's just going to pixellate the image, and you can do that in the edit if you really want. 10x is a bit low you'll struggle on wave shots for sure. You can buy a 2x or higher screw on adapter that will turn your 10x into 20x, but then you have to take it off for close ups and then you've missed the shot. Yes I use a circular polariser when shooting kiting, but not in the housing (or from airplane windows) cos the port creates some weird polarised rainbow effects. Getting good housing shots while treading water in waves is extremely difficult.
