Wave.....you and I are seeking the same kite, I'm keeping my fingers crossed (bad pun).

Dacho...you need wind, but always love your thoughts.

Let us face it, we are going to get 100 days of wind per year if lucky, no matter how hard we try. Unless of course we can live in a different part of the world three times per year.....

Look at the side profile of a modern bridled foil it is not FLAT, it is approx 50% of the arc of a sled

they would have to give the same pull in the same winds, to the rider right?

To get the same pull in the same winds, 1 kite I believe and my experience has told me; and I could be completely wrong, is going to be bigger and heavier than the other. hence why i'm saying the smaller and lighter of the two kites is more efficient.

YEP you could be completely wrong!!!
You may as well say that smaller and lighter cars, planes, people, ants, etc are more efficient than bigger ones!
And you completely ignore each time I mention it that the foils you talk of have 2 complete surfaces, as well as profile ribs, bridles, etc, WTF mate?

then tell me what your definition of efficiency is and how it is that they aren't more efficient than LEI's according to your definition. That way someone else including myself might learn something new.

Anyway for the sake of others and yourself.
Bridled parafoils are not inherently more efficient kites.
There are certain designs within the design group known as bridled parafoils that are more efficient than other bridled parafoils, and some other kite designs like inflatable sleds.

Efficiency of a kite design, hmmmm, curly question?

The dictionary definition gives us a little clue, in the use of the word system.
All the kites we use are only a part of the system that is kitesurfing, and we ourselves are an essential and integral part of that system.
We kiteflyers must be included, because the kite cannot do any real work, that can be measured to determine efficiency without the input of a kite flyer.
Lets assume that the determinants of efficiency in our traction system that we use to kitesurf with, are upwind ability, and lift (or pull, as you like to call it), ok?
Can you tell us that any particular kite design has a definite and verifiably measurable greater capacity in these 2 areas (not the only ones we could use to define efficiency either) over all its sizes and brands/models, than all other kite designs, sizes and models?
If you can I will be very interested.

What I am saying is that I do get to fly and use a very wide range of kites, and so far not one particular kite design stands out as definitively more efficient, by any definition, than all other traction kites.

To me they are all tools to do certain jobs, the jobs are defined by the desires of the rider, and the basics of the task itself, which is to kitesurf. The desires and abilities of the rider play a big part in kite selection, and in my experience, for the winds we want to kite in which is 10ish to 30ish knots, the lines get blurred everything gets a bit grey!! They all work!

I am really keen to fly one of Brunos latest kites, and keen to ride all brands they come in, although I suspect that the one I will get to use first will be the Cab version.

All other statements on efficiency, my state of happiness, my projective and transferred psychological abilities or tendencies by all other people, are OBSOLETE!

i agree according to your definition of what kite efficiency is about which prety much sounds the same as what i would say the characteristics of kite performance is, and that you would never be able to define a kite as being more efficient... because to do that, according to your definition would be like saying it is the best kite

and i recon your spot on in that if you unravelled a foil , and unstitched, cut and pasted and made a quilt out of the kite and laid it next to a debladdered, unstitched and blanketfied sled, the foil would have more surface area.

and the flat foils are not entirely flat, even if they had 50% the droop of a sled, that's 50% less energy pointing sideways as opposed to being useful output in the "system"

I'm not trying to compare apples with oranges... a x meter sized flat foil is going to give more pull than an x meter sized sled, and to me that means it's the more efficient of the two, to you it will only mean it pulls harder than the same manufacture rated sized sled but if it makes more lift and it's the same size, then it's managing to convert the wind power more efficiently into usefull pull to the rider, i don't care if you measure your kites in component form, or with 3 dimensional volumetric measurements.. if someone comes to your shop and asks for a ten meter, you wouldn't sell them a 6 meter foil caus it unravells to ten meters ?, you'd say the foil pulls harder in a ten than the sled... and you probably allready know this anyway? hence 500 posts ago with beating around the bush,many twists and turns and windless days y i said the foils are more efficient.

I just thought I'd let you know that many yacht and windsurf sails are twinskin. Most of the new Formula Windsurfing sails are about 30% twinskin. C class Catamarans are now nearly all using twinskin sails, and moths are moving that way too. The reason they are not in general use is they are expensive and complicated. They do have andvantages though, eg. they are super efficient.

The Yellow pages cat that holds the speed record used a twin skin sail ( I think?), and the earlier version Jacobs Ladder used twin skin Flexifoil power kites stacked together.
The Moth sail looks like it becomes a single skin effectively when sheeted in hard, and looks extremely impractical for everyday use eh?
The Invictus cat team link is a further development of the yellow pages concept, and it looks like that for outright speed records this is the direction a lot of sailors will head for.

The point I picked up on with dachopper was that he was using false or assumptive logic to claim that bridled parafoil kites were inherently more efficient than single skin LEI designs, because of the ratio of flat to projected area being smaller for that type of kite, which is simply not true.

I know from many years trying to as fast as possible with kites on a variety of surfaces that parafoil kites are efficient, especially at higher wind speeds, but so are single skin kites. Big parafoils, and all big kites used for light wind, have practical limits forced upon them by the availability of current technology. Turning these beasts has always been a major issue, and must be factored into any efficiency claim,

Like I have said above we do not want just outright speed as kitesurfers (thats the overwhelming majority of us). Nor do we want abolute minimum light wind performance, its all about 10 to 30 knots or so, isn't it?

At the end of the day, we are using kites, not sails or high speed aircraft wings, even though there are some similarities between all three.

At the very extremes of each application of wind and flight, we can find people obsessed with records and speed, but even they have to finely balance drag, with lift, there is no such thing as a 100% efficient wing, is there?

Most efficient, well lets leave that for the record stalkers. The tips of LEI and parafoil sleds are needed, and not solely drag inducing and therefore cannot be judged as 100% parasitic to the efficiency of the kite, which is another point that I don't think dachopper is prepared to accept just yet.

The ratio of flat area to projected area is not an indicator of efficiency, when taken on its own. Cabrinha are very cleverly wording their marketing and are not stating that either, from what I have read. All the claims I have read are in relation to a "classic arch style kite" or something to that effect. The inclusion of the word classic has me thinking they are talking about an old and virtually obsolete design of LEI, also invented by Bruno.

I think the depower/wind range claims about this kite design are the most interesting thing I want to test. Depower and wind range still do not make the design the most efficient though.

All True Steve. I don't know if dachopper was saying they are more efficient only because the Area and Projected area were similar, but also becouse their shape is more of a complete wing, where a LEI is only the top of a wing more like a wright brothers wing, ie. Like a sheet of paper curved into shape.
Brownee has told me before, and I tend to agree, that since kites don't fly at 90 degrees to the wind, they are mostly just big spinnakers, and only a wing to the apparent wind.

Yep tend to agree, even the most "efficient" kites are still very inefficient compared to aircraft wings. They work on the principle of deflection more than aerodynamic lift.

A lot of what Dachopper was trying to sat got very blurry/confused and contradictory very fast, but I hope we have all learned a bit more about kites.

Even though kitesurfing is a relatively new sport, a paradigm shift in kite design is probably imminent.
The last mega-major leap in design was two-liners > four-liners with the chicken loop assembly.
That was well over four years ago.

Sure, there's been advancements in all areas over the years, but nothing of significance.
I've viewed pics of the Hellfish and read the reports but all in all it's still just a conventional kite.
OK, BEST has substituted traditional materials for a laminate cloth and made the bladders pencil-skinny.
They're having a dig but is it ground-breaking?

I'm more impressed with a design that looks at radically changing the basic OUTLINE.

Quit being a nerd, it's bad for your rep.
Real kitesurfers aren't even slightly interested with indoor kite-flying.
Same goes for running around tugging on a kite in below pus wind.

We like ripable wind man.(Like today on the West Coast, 30knots of punch.) Ouch!

And stacking three kites together in Vanuatu to make up 49sqm so you can 'kite' in pus wind, that's so late 1990's.

Maybe if the hellfish and the crossbow prove to be the ****e, then in 2006/07 sometime someone might release a crossbow type, but with the advantages of the hellfish - i.e made from the same material, with thinner LE and lighter weight... i guess thats likely to be best, since they have exclusivity on the material for a while...

Seams like it could be a great combo, presuming what we hear about the hellfish and the crossbow are somewhere close to true...

I am into them, I will get them this year - this is the way of the future! Can't wait till they bring out a kite that is solid I mean stiff like a wing but as light as material and just folds away.
I wonder if the bridle stretches or breaks will it be easy to fix or replace.
I dont think they are like majorly different to what we already have as far as hang time and so forth.
I do like the shape and believe it is a step in the right direction for kiting!
